Tries Hieraches or The Three Patriachs ...

Xronia Polla ! ...

Today is the celebration day of the main church in town ...

If you did not know, then at 6:30am, you would have received a wake up call, with the call to church, on the cathedral bells.

The Three Hierachs or three patriarchs, were the great teachers of the church:

Ayios Vasilios the Great
Ayios Grigorious the Theologian
Ayios Ioannis Chrsostomos.

As its the name day of the teachers, its also a school holiday here on the island ...

Mayor elections ...

I understand Teo Tzoumas is to enter the race to be the next Mayor of Skiathos. (As tipped some years ago by a friend on the island) I always believe anyone who wants to be Mayor, should either be or know an accountant. He has that covered ...

Later update:

'Candidate for mayor of Skiathos will be Thodoris Tzoumas, president of the cultural association "Skiathos", as he said today speaking to ERT Volos. The official announcement will take place in about a month, because he wants to complete a cycle of duties he has taken as chairman of the club, but the group has already been set up and is working towards heading the ballot. "I think it's time for me to change the terrain as my need to offer to the place is timeless. Now is the team that will support me and I believe we will all together bring the change to our island. I hope our fellow citizens will give us the opportunity to make the Skiathos that we deserve. We have a very large network of people who can support '

Nikos Plomaritis has already announced his intention to stand for the election, and some bloke from the KKK (Communist party) ...

Just a thought ...

Apparently Banana beach is ruined ...

Not worth the trek to get there apparently, and its making a few newbies think twice 🤔 ...

Which is absolute tosh - Its a lovely beach with a great hotel (Elivi) behind it, well worth a visit, and has the best sunsets on the island.

Just think - if every beach was abandoned or written off, by island lovers because of tourist development, then none of us would have ever have discovered the island by now at all. Many of us having visited on the personal recommendation, of friends and family, since tourism started in the 1970's.

In fact no one would have come at all, even those who profess today to love the place so much ...

Panagiotis and Elton, would never have had the taverna, which by now would have long since collapsed into the sea. Probably then have been recycled into firewood, and none of you would have got to meet Panagiotis, and enjoy his own unique style on the bus ...

Oh and when you do visit, as I am sure you will, make sure you go to Banana. Then watch the sunset like I did there one evening back in 2002, and raise a glass just like i did as it sets over the Pelion ...

Sundowner - Banana style - circa 2002 ...

Also the passenger ferry "Proteus" every Sunday from January 27 to March 31, 2019.

Well they all deserve a lie in, especially if its rather windy ...

The Hospital appointment ...

Hospital appointment day has arrived ...

Sadly it was on Blue Monday which apparently is the most depressing day of the year :)

I arrived early (Silly mistake, must be to do with the full moon) and the only place you can get a coffee, is the inappropriately named 'friends cafe' Seems you have to be aged mid to high 70's to work here. Despite working in a hospital, they don't seem keen to use the facilities. Happy to discuss their ailments, whilst thinking about serving you though ...

Drink coffee (Medium foul) and after the discussion about frozen hips, go to the third floor ...

Thought I was in orthapedics, so much additional walking furniture, assembled in one place. If I trip over it, must mean I am in the ophthalmology after all. Can always blame being dazzled by the unrestricted sunlight, pouring through the windows, that have no blinds ...

Incumbents of waiting room have ...
  • 2 x crutches single type
  • 3 with walking sticks
  • 1 x zimmer (In aisle)
  • 1 x crutches double type
  • No-one with white sticks or guide dogs
1 x coughing sputtering germ spreader, with walking stick, and not using a tissue ...

Getting to a vacant chair, require the skills of being a show jumper at the 'Horse of the year show'

Waiting room (Former or standby three bed room with all sockets/points) has four types of furniture, can't be that difficult to move the chairs around the hospital, to make the waiting rooms uniform in appearance ...

Biased Broadcasting Corporation news is available on the telly box.

First call and test over, return to the waiting room ...

Old dear in a wheelchair is wheeled in, and now blocking the doorway, no room in the waiting room.
Its Doris, they have written her name on the back of the chair.

As the waiting room is blocked, by dear old Doris, and all the walking aids, they shout your name from the corridor ...

Name, address, date of birth, telephone number. Appointment letter.
Yet for some reason they can't get it right,  insist on calling me by my grandfather's name.

He passed away in 1974 ......

New chair, this time its a wooden type, no padding, now seated out of direct sunlight.

The waiting room, on my third return to wait, seems now to be clear of numerous walking aids, and incumbent owners ...

Three tests and one consultant chat later, Now in a new department, in a different block, in area 7.

No sign of any aliens, however opposite is someone using a 'slump on trike' as a walking aid, could be a Martian from 'War of the Worlds' ...

I am patient 46. No 45 is next to me - seems friendly enough, we discuss where to go for lunch, as now been here three hours ...

Off for a walk to the dispensary. I may be some time, and I was. Takes around 12 minutes to advance a number in the queue. Worth the wait as the pharmacist was excellent ...

Home Ioannis, and try not to loose the prescription on the way ...

Later:

Not ever having use for prescriptions lasting more than the packet, they arrive in. I have just registered to order repeat prescriptions online. Seems the receptionists have around a 1000 things they do not do, on the surgery web site.

'your registration is nearly complete. In order to access any services you must verify your email address by clicking the link we have sent to your inbox. Once you have verified your email you can then log in'

Presumably sending the verification email to complete the process is another one of them ...

A super wolf blood moon ...

Amateur astronomers will be able to witness a total eclipse, and a super wolf blood moon, The total Lunar eclipse will be visible in the morning skies from Europe early on Monday morning.

This will be the last total Lunar eclipse until 2021, (This is due to the EU insisting on a two year transition period)

The Moon will pass deep through the Earth’s shadow in the morning of January 21. Total eclipse will last for 62 minutes, with mid-eclipse at 5:16 UT (5:16 GMT, 6:16 CET). Observing conditions will be progressively better further west, as the Moon will be higher, in a darker sky.

The best views – provided the sky is clear – will be from western Europe (United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Canary Islands), where the Moon will still be quite high in the western sky during the total phase of the eclipse.

If you are up for it, you can find the timetable here ...

Stratos Tsikounas - Theofania champion (Again) ...

Today is the celebration of Theofania, The blessing of the waters ...

Theofania, one of the most anticipated events on the Orthodox calendar, will be celebrated today regardless of the weather ...

The Epiphany celebration honors the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River more than 2,000 years ago.

Stratos Tsikounas
Stratos Tsikounas ...
He was and was not 16 years old when he first participated in the celebration of Theophany in Skiathos. The reason for Stratos Tsikounas, who for the last six years dives in the Old Port of Skiathos where the Holy Cross Dive Ceremony is held and has managed to catch the cross, six times in a row. Tomorrow, without serious inconvenience, Skiathit will be diving for the seventh consecutive year, having the same expectations as the first time.

On Sunday, January 6, in the churches of the Three Hierarchs and the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Skiathos, and in the Holy Monastery of Evangelistria, the Holy Sanctuary will be celebrated, followed by the dove of the Holy Cross and the sanctification of the waters by the priests of the island. Stratos Tsikounas unconditionally rescues the Cross from 2013. He dives with other swimmers, the so-called butichadas, who fall into the waters of the Aegean to catch him and take his blessing.

The 22-year-old was born in 1996 in San Francisco, where his parents were found for work. His family was repatriated when he was three years old. The last four years have helped his father, who has a boat on the island, a seasonal job he keeps as long as the tourist season lasts.
The emotions that overwhelm Stratos Tsikounas are strong. "I find it a great blessing every year to dive into the sea to celebrate the Epiphany," he added, adding: "All I feel is so intense that it is not easily described in words. I feel the same joy as the first time I dived. Even when I was serving my military service, I had taken leave of my unit in Evros to give "this" to the island. "

Last year he had decided not to come back.

But following the greetings of friends and acquaintances, he was persuaded to try this year and continue the personal tradition he has created. As for the motivation he had in January 2013, when he drove for the first time? "Every time no one knows how many will dive after the end of the Divine Liturgy. I still remember, however, the great joy I felt when I caught the Cross for the first time. That year we were 28 whales, but I was the youngest in age. Others were winter swimmers, others were snorkeling. I did not have the same experience. You need to make a great macroboat, since the Cross is deeply submerged, it reaches almost to the bottom. Everything is to overcome the coldness of iced water, because these temperatures are very low ".

In closing, Stratos Tsikounas revealed a custom that is observed in his hometown: "It is customary for all swimmers to fall into the water every year in Theophania, to take the Cross. On the eve of the Lights, he holds the Holy Cross the whimper that catches him. The rest of the days are drawn between the rest, provided they have not been taken. Usually for two, three or four days, if the priest allows us, we take him to the houses of the island for good and receive gifts and gifts from the housewives of Skiathos, rendering some of the funds to the Church"

Snow ...

Looks like Junior has got her Christmas wish, after all ❄☃️❄⛄❄ ...

After last nights deluge, it turned to snow. Opened the curtains to a dusting of snow. Our departure day so we are packing and off to the airport this afternoon.

Spent the morning in a coffee shop, watching the at times quite heavy snow showers, after SWMBO had a packing issue. So my trip to the Oscar Schindler factory museum nearby went in the bin, whilst it was sorted. Never mind something to do next time we are here.

Popped into the Orzo - People Music Nature restaurant, for lunch and it was buzzing. Lots of customers arriving after visiting the Oscar Schindler factory.

Great place to people watch and enjoy lunch, pasta and burger lovers well catered for, but I went for the chopped steak, chips and an Orzo salad having missed out on steak on NYE ...

SWMBO went with the healthy option, the salad and crispy bread wrap ...

Very nice train every 30 mins to the airport, just 9zl, which is just about €2/£2. A bargain and much easier than taxis or taking a coach. Lunch table to airport check in within one hour ...

Nice modern and almost queue free airport, excellent facilities, and very busy with flights to the UK, that evening as the snow showers continued ...

It did allow for the aircraft to be delayed as it needed deicing, not something you get at Skiathos, but interesting to watch, as the aircraft wings were cleaned and decontaminated of the offending ice and snow ...

New Years day ...

Happy new year from Krakow ...

Well it started with a bang, the best fireworks I have heard for many years, and its was the locals not any official display. There was a big televised concert in Rynek (Town square) and a laser show illuminating the grey clouds.

We stayed indoors, watching the fun on TV, and the windows rattling with the fireworks. SWMBO was reminiscing about the 'good old days of communism' and poured me a glass ...

Whatever happens in 2019, whatever challenges you face. Rest assured nothing will ever be as bad, as the glass of 'Russian champagne' my wife gave to me.

If I loose my sight, the last thing I saw, was my Junior, teaching her mother to dance the floss ...

I added the Cherry Wodka, to take the foul taste away, it was turned into bubbly paraffin ...

To get over the disappointment of the Russian paint stripper, we spent a great New Years day, riding the trams. Junior ice skating again, followed by a leisurely pizza lunch at Papryczki 5, lashings of ice cream to follow ...

Followed by a hot chocolate (With Cherry Wodka - The cough medicine) and a very nice brandy in Santos what was becoming my favourite cafe (Nothing at all to do with the very pretty waitress - Cough Cough) ...

Then as we left the cafe, it was raining ...

Actually it lashed it down, high winds, stinging horizontal rain, and yes thunder and lightning. I was soaked to the skin, through every single layer - worse than any September day in Skiathos ...

The trusty merrill walking boots were waterlogged, and that's just walking from the tram stop ...
Not been this soaked, since i rode my racing bike to school (a few years ago)
