Congratulations to the beach cleaning teams ...

Especially the children who were getting stuck in, on the Northern beaches ...

No mean feat after the winter storms, for sure ...

Airport News:

From Fraport ...

The flights from abroad to Skiathos Airport start on 2 May , which will soon welcome the first British tourists to travel from Manchester with Thomas Cook.

This year's air traffic is expected to fluctuate at last year's levels, with a slight increase from abroad.

In the meantime, two new aviation destinations are added, from Poznan, Poland and Stavanger, Norway. The new direct line from Poznan opens on June 2 and the corresponding one from Norway on May 19th.

The general picture is satisfactory, messages coming from abroad are encouraging and, according to airport manager Stefanos Lambropoulos, Skiathos airport is an important gateway to the Northern Sporades.

According to Mr. Lambropoulos, a series of renovation works are planned by Frapport Greece to improve the overall image of Skiathos Airport.

The old terminal changes its appearance and the new one, respectively, is being refurbished in the sanitary facilities. The aim of the interventions is to make both spaces operational, while according to the plan, the old terminal will serve the public domestic arrivals during the winter, from October until May, while the airport fire station will be fully renovated.

The aim of Frapport Greece is to make Skiathos airport functional for all and at the same time to attract tourists from Greece and abroad.

The Avantis ...

Has finally gone to the scrapyard ...

Yesterday,  the cargo ship Avantis was towed out of the port by tug, The Avantis which has remained an eyesore in the harbour of Agios Georgios after the fire on board, back in September 2012, sailed for the last time.

Laid up since 23rd July 2012 in Skiathos island port the vessel was confiscated in a very sad condition. On 4th September 2012 she suffered a fire in the accommodation rooms. Her fate remained unknown. Her owners based in Chalkis Greece had already ceased operating.

The cargo vessel had been a major concern with the ongoing risk of pollution of the surrounding area, and an extended ongoing situation with the administrators resisting the removal of the boat. Without any apparent plans for the burned out hulk.

Gone but not forgotten, and apparently off to a scrapyard in Turkey ...

It's not cricket ...

Recent events have got me thinking ...

Qantas admited that it 'tampered' with a B787 to enable it to fly non-stop from Oz to London.

Umpires at LHR found one side of the aircraft had been roughed up using small packets of peanuts. The other shined illegally using hot lemon scented towels ...

Roughing up one side of the plane creates drag, as the shiny side moves through the air quicker, making the plane to curve in flight slightly to the left (outswinger) right (inswinger) depending which way round the world you are going for 17 hours ...

Pilots and crew admited tampering with the plane and have apologised.

Dogs home table top sale ...

It's the spring table top sale tomorrow, at Milos, in aid of the Skiathos dogs home ...

It does have a fixture clash with the big holiday event. The independence day parade ...

Hopefully the event will be well supported.

Tonight it's Earth hour at 20:30, when in line with other countries at this time. We turn off the lights and perhaps light a candle instead.

Later tonight well 3am in Skiathos, we wind the clocks forward one hour - yes it's that time to spring forward to summer and enjoy extra evening light ...

Stormy winds battering the island. It's blowing Beaufort 7 at the least ...

Definitely a bar of chocolate, glass of red and a good book kind of afternoon ...

Anyone boarding the afternoon ferry, is in for the trip of a lifetime ...

If you have not moved your fishing boat to safety, it may take some retrieving.

The C130 landed again this afternoon. There must be another medical evacuation taking place.

They do not call the Sporades, 'The gates of the wind' for no reason ...

Medical evacuation ...

On Saturday evening a C-130 aircraft of the Air Force, evacuated the former mayor of Skiathos and the current vice-governor, Nikolaos Plomaritis, to Hospital in Athens after being taken unwell ...

The former mayor, who lamented the loss of his father in the previous 24 hours, captain Kyriacos Plomaritis, felt sick and unwell on Saturday afternoon, leading to his transfer to the Health Center of the island.

The doctor decided to transfer him to a hospital, after which, the transfer by sea to the Hospital of Volos was blocked, a C-130 aircraft of the Air Force was called, and finally he was transferred to Athens around 5pm.

Note: This has been widely reported over the last 24 hours. We wish Nikos a speedy recovery and return to good health - Περαστικα ...

Sad news to share ...

Captain Kyriakos Plomaritis has departed these shores ...

The famous captain and owner of the Nikolaos tour boat, has passed away.

The funeral bell will ring for the much respected member of the island community, at 11am this morning.

We will miss his friendly greeting, as we pass Kabourelia, where he would sit with friends, looking out to sea ...

It will be a very different Pasca this year. One sadly missing his commanding voice, from the church, where he would read out the psalms ...

Catch of the day ...

Fresh fish anyone ...

All the usual species, and on one van a stunning John Dory destined for one lucky persons table tonight ...

But those grey mullet look very tempting ...

Meanwhile 'The Admiral' is repairing his nets.

It's a case of 'knit one pearl one' but they know what they are doing. They have had years of practice ...

When I go fishing I end up like that. Same amount of Nylon, with me in the middle of it and just one fishing rod ...

Catch up ...

Summer is coming ...

It's rather warm down on the rock. In addition there has not been a lot of rain this winter. Preparations are starting to take shape for the summer ahead.

Lots of rumours, gossip and the general do you know what's going on' s. Lots of cards being played, and many very close to the chest.

Try to look inconspicuous, with a tape measure, and a builder outside a closed business. It's sure to raise an eyebrow or two.

Paint pots and ladders very much in evidence, wherever you venture. Lots of life, despite where others say it's dead. Clearly they do not go to the right places.

The real skiathos is thriving, and the spring sunshine is giving the locals, and visitors fresh energy for the crazy times of the coming summer ahead ...

The Skiathos Express, returns to service on the 10th March, hopefully the ANES Proteus will then serve the islands from the other direction, so locals can get to the hospital or as appointments on the mainland ...

Of course always papers to chase, people to see, the bureaucracy, and as ever a warm welcome from friends ...

Kalo Mina - Μάρτιος ...

Good Month - Mártios - March is here ...

Pinch, punch, 1st of the month,

Its also St Davids day, when thousands upon thousands of daffodils, and leeks will be sacrificed across the UK. Today the children go to school wearing something yellow.

Capital controls ...

Greece on Wednesday moved to ease capital restrictions imposed since the summer of 2015, raising the monthly limit of cash that can be withdrawn from bank accounts by 28 percent.

Athens first imposed capital controls in July 2015 to stem a flight of cash from its banks at the height of a debt crisis which led to its third financial bailout since 2010.

Based on a finance ministry decree published in the government’s gazette, individuals will be allowed to withdraw lump sums of up to 2,300 euros in cash per month from bank accounts from 1,800 euros currently, effective from March 1.
