Another day ...

Another visit to the vegetable garden ...

Which is starting to crop nicely

However, in town, the talk is of crisis - Where are the people? Crazy August is just a few days away, and the port has spaces to moor your boat, Car places have bikes, cars and lawnmowers (Quads) to rent.

Even kids availability ...
The clubs are open, BBC, Pure, The party boat is available. Yet it seems the Greek tourist is going elsewhere this year.

Judging by the way the aircraft are pulling up quickly on the runway when they land, then they are not full either - With or without your luggage on board.

The new water taxi is starting operations from the old port, to the small harbour at Koukounaries located below the Skiathos Palace hotel. Bus stops 22/23 ...

The quick squeeze ...

Not into the holiday shorts ...

It seems the M&S shoppers are in town ...

If they are not happy squeezing the bread and fruit in M&S on a Saturday morning, they are doing it here on holiday too.

Manolis has the best fruit and veg display in town, but it's not a touch, and feel experience, If it were he would make a lot of money doing it ...

RTL - TV channel from Germany were filming at the airport on Friday. They were recording people getting their kicks, standing behind Jet engines for a TV programme. Which I understand is expected to be aired tonight.

Feeling a bit ...

Sleepy this morning ...

The sunrise this morning, still from the sea. It's nearly gone, behind the other stones, our view from 'the rock' will be a different sunrise for the next few months.

Playing the pizzaiolo, last night and banging out pizzas from a friend's wood oven.

Cranked the oven up to wood mark seven initially, and later down to wood mark five, when the kleftico went in, for a couple of hours ...

Thirsty work, maintaining the oven and the assembly line of pizzas coming from the kitchen. It was an assemble your own pizza from the ingredients night. Pleased to report, I retained all the hairs on my hands and arms this time ...

Greek friends very impressed with my Garlic baguettes, and flat garlic bread which was devoured.

How did you make this? You made it yourself? This is very good!

My homemade tzatziki, even got the nod, that one friend said was the business.

I would have banged another large clove of garlic, in it had it been mine alone, firmly being in the 'Captain Michael' school of tzatziki class, But let's break them in gently ...

As was the Peloponnisos tsipouro, (Raki on holiday?) that he poured. Which was quite a potent affair, having been brewed in relatives kalivi, somewhere down south ...

Big thanks to Konstantinos Fergadis and friends at Pizza Gravisi, for their expertise, and guidance prior to last night.

I will need a little more practice, but thanks to them. We all had a great night, and no burnt offerings served up by Skiathian ...

PS: Plenty of wasp action last night, like bees to a honeypot. If anyone tells you otherwise, the blinkers must be on. As for mossies they died happy after the Raki ...

Endless Blue ...

We all love it don't we ...

This was the view yesterday, not a bad one either as far as I am concerned. Steady temperatures around 28 degrees. More than enough to encourage a swim or a chilled glass of something wet and refreshing.

During the afternoon, the fire engines were out, as there was a small fire at the refuse facility. It was brought under control quickly without getting to cause any further issues.

Last night was the annual celebration, the name/saints day of the small church at Aghia Paraskevi.

The Holy Icon of Kounistria visits the church ...
'Agripnia was born on a friday, in the time of Emperor Hadrian, so named (given another name at birth) Parasveki. Her Greek parents gave all her wealth to the poor and the church. She is protector of the eyes and saint of the blind '...

Noticeably the sun is rising later in the morning and has started to head south along the horizon. Amazing how quick it changes ...

A busy couple of days ahead of friends arriving next week. Better prepare my script for my introduction to Skiathos meeting.

Or shall I just go fishing instead - Anyone for thrapsala? ...

Come for souvlaki they said the other night ...

With friends from Skiathos and Cyprus, who have been leading us astray.

So 15 minutes later, I am on a table with 14 people, from Skiathos and Cyprus and Nassos the musician.

Souvlaki, Gyros, Village sausage, Meatballs, Chips, Tzatziki, and Greek salad ...
Beer water Coca Cola and complimentary deserts ...

Excellent waitress, probably the owner's daughter about 14/15. Excellent view of passing traffic and next door to a Butchers shop of the same family ...

Hit the beach at Koukounaries yesterday, with the same friends, and stayed until sunset  ...

Cookounari 2019

Then a quick sprint to 'Under the pine tree' and why not - Very good it was too ...

Attikon Cinema:

I am reliably informed this will be the final year, that you can enjoy the experience.
After 53 years, it's coming to an end.

Enjoy it while you can ...

Fruits of my labour:

Quite pleased with the latest crop, looks like another bucket of tzatziki will be in the making later today.

When friends say where did you buy these? its now fun.

I grew them myself
Really - too much work ...
Yes I did.

Next question, Oh did you pick them yourself? ...

Was up at taxiacharis refilling the water bottles, and there was some very fresh organic material - Never a shovel and a carrier bag, to hand when you need one ...

A salmon pink sunrise, this morning, the moon is still up, its shining bright after the full moon we missed with the storm. The swallows are staring their acrobatics, and most of the sparrows have now departed their nests under the roof tiles ...

Yesterday was a busy one at the airport, with 27 arrivals and departures from the mainland, UK, Czech, Germany, Holland Italy, Serbia, and a couple of private aircraft ...

Violent Storm ...

The weather arrived with a bang, before midnight ...

I have seen some Skiathos storms in summer, but this one has been a fierce one, to put it mildly ...

31 strikes within the last minute, within 30km of Skiathos, May more not recorded by the app, judging by the flashes and rolling thunder, and the power dropping as the storm rocked the island.

Weather absolutely foul, it's been heavy rain, thunder and lightning over 6.5 hours. Anyone on low lying ground, on the island, must have been in serious trouble tonight.

Storm activity at 7am ...
If you are at a UK airport waiting to come here today, if you get here you may have a few problems at your accommodation, down the island ...

Jet wash ...

After a crazy day, when I was rained on quite a bit ...

I dodged thunderbolts, and the rain, and watched as a coach bumped into someone's motorbike, Right in front of its owner. Cue the best ever tantrum/greek argument ever, and they did it all, out there in the rain ...

Todays 'top tip' for a rainy day at the airport.

It's lashing down, and you just want to get into the airport, after retrieving your bags, and are getting soaked to the skin.

The entrance and exit where you step off the paving slabs, on to the marble. It is a death trap. Two folks went down there and were lucky not to break an arm. White marble looks nice to an architect, but with no grooves to take the water away, its a Greek olympic skating rink.

That is if you can get through with your case, as the airport staff, and security teams smokers are all huddled around the doors, and the cleaner is doing her best with a mop and bucket, around peoples feet ...

The passenger has just gone down on the deck with a thud, and somehow is still attached to her case - "Now I know it says I am an airport ambassador on the high vis jacket" but I can't help, it's my fag break ...

Equally impressed by the hundred or so, with nothing to do (Its raining) and went down to Amaretto.

Which was standing room only, as apart from the regulars, they all had the same idea. I had a table with friends from Sweden, and Babis the turbo prop chasing dog.

Down the runway comes the Volotea - Quite a pretty plane so doing the tour of Italy/Skiathos yesterday around fifty folks troop, their way out into the heavy rain - To stand behind it, for their thrill of the rainy day ...

Others hunt around to claim any unbagged seats, whilst the jet fuel sniffers are out in the rain.

Under the wings of the aircraft are two large hairdryers: They suck in huge quantities of air, mix it with Jet 1, and out of the back comes hot air, that forces the aircraft forwards when the captain lets go of the brakes ...

Got it? Good, you remember some physics from school ...

On a wet day: The two large hairdryers suck in huge quantities of air containing water, that was rain. It mixes it with Jet 1, and out of the back comes huge quantities of hot air, containing water, that forces the aircraft forwards when the captain lets go of the brakes ...

On a wet day they wind up the hair dryers, because of friction, and loss of power on the wet ...

Got it? Good, you remember some more physics from school, only the jet fuel sniffing, thrill seekers did not at all - Must have skipped school ...

Camera and tripod ?
Jest wash ...
Nice place to leave your hire cars ...

They disappeared into a cloud of spray, and small stones. Many of them backwards following hats etc across the car park and the conveniently placed hire cars.

I suggest the Amaretto sell seats at €10 a head (Going rate for sunbeds with Brolly) on a rainy day. It will be a sell-out, as its the best entertainment on the island. See folks who have been silly, and look like they have been through a car wash.

Heading out of the rain into amaretto trying to look cool and dry off, after being intentionally drenched to the skin ...

Oh but its fun they say, and yes it is. You don't know how much it is worth, just to watch you ...

Foul weather

Thunderstorm last night ...

... and again at 3am this morning.

Strife at the airport, as the first flight of the day, Cyprus Airways made two attempts to land. Before calling twice to divert to Athens, then landing at Thessaloniki.

Meanwhile, the flights from Belgrade, were getting dizzy over Skopelos. Whilst holding for a break in the weather, to enable them to land ...

Which they did, after five circuits and both calling for weather updates and possible diversions to Athens ...

Later the Cyprus Airways aircraft arrived safely, after a delay, and a break in the weather ...

Halkidiki in the north of Greece has especially been badly hit last night by the storms. At least six people have died, many injured and everywhere there is damage because of the very strong winds.

In Skiathos, we are just wet and waterlogged after what has been a very long hot spell

Good morning, finally, a gradual fall in the temperature, is expected today ...

It seems some rain has been forecast on Thursday morning. The strong storms that are mentioned from the weather reports, in the Adriatic. Seem to be for the time being to be headed for northern areas of Greece, Not too far away ...

The winds will increase from Thursday dawn from the North at 5-6 bf and the temperature in gradual drop (about 5-6 degrees)

Little Italy & BA2224 ...

I have been there whilst in the 'Big Apple' some years ago ...

Last night Little Italy came to me, I found myself surrounded by the good people of 'Big Italy' a few Brits and some locals.

I have said here, many times, I rather like the people of Italy, not least when they are chatting. A conversation is like a song, If its usually a symphony to my ears. Last night we had the full orchestra as the tables jabbered away and it was great ...

Whilst waiting for my dinner companion, I had surveyed the fish slab, and it was being well maintained with plenty of ice ...

Tables had filled quickly and I was drawn to the musical conversation, of the Italian Mamma, and her daughter on the next table, overlooking the water. Mamma had the look of a seasoned cook about her and had seen some pasta in her life.

The daughter was something else ...

If there is a previous life, then this lady was a thoroughbred filly, of the racehorse fraternity. A fine chestnut tan, which was evident, and on display, and hair groomed to perfection. Nails shoes dress jewelry, as they would say at Ascot, 'extremely well turned out' and with a posture probably from training in ballet or dance somewhere ...

The seafood plate, was moved away, more sparkling water, a glass more of white wine for Mamma.

Watermelon arrived on their table, a work of art from the kitchen,  and was dissected with the skill of a trained surgeon, whilst Mamma lit up some classy cigarettes (If there is such a thing) ...

There was a negotiation about expresso, that went on for some time, a shake of the head, a flick of the mane, dark chestnut and highlights, probably from a boutique somewhere in Milan ...

On the table opposite, someone pulled a small dog, up into view. A Yorkshire terrier type, complete with a bow, to join the dinner table. A handbag dog perhaps? Yes, it did look like the owner, her hair starched into position, but without the bow ...

It must have been twenty perfect exquisite sips, of the expresso before Mamma pulled out a fistful of notes, and the deal of the night was done ...

They got up, to go there was a crash of broken glass, as the waiter's jaw dropped, and bumped a nearby table. Clearly distracted by the vision of Italian class gliding past.

The cleaning swat team swung into action as if nothing had happened. I hope the glass did not come out of his wages ...

She looked left, right and headed left, with Mamma pointing the way, and headed off into the night, after asking for directions to a boutique ...

If only I had a Maserati, round the back of the Alkyon, I could have offered them a lift ...

BA 2224 to London City

Late news from JH in London: BA2224 to LCY 8th July ...

'Was going to praise BA for great flight but when we landed at London city they had left/taken off 30 pieces of luggage due to an overweight plane, and obviously ours are still there' ...

Let's hope there is room on the TUI to LGW this lunchtime. The RB211's don't have a problem lifting off the runway. With some forethought, by BA, they can take the spares bags from todays LCY flight as well.

Then JH may have a chance to be reunited with his bags, sometime later tonight ...

If you are stuck on the M23/M25 towards the tunnel this afternoon, and you see a flat truck with some Armani luggage, on the back - do get in touch ...
