Tsiknopempti - Charred Thursday ...

Today is Tsiknopempti - Charred Thursday ...

Burnt or Charred Thursday in Greece. Its the day when you BBQ as much meat as you can and feast yourself. The name Tsiknopempti refers to the smell of charcoal, and grilled meats, wafting through the air.

Carnival in Greece is a celebration, and a chance to escape everyday monotony, and enter into a world of party, fantasy, jinks and 'kefi'  (high spirits) its a feast of dance, wine and meat before the sacrifices and fasting of Lent.

The Tradition of Apokries / Karnavali
(Apokries may also be spelt Apokreas, Apokrias)

In Greece the Carnival started in Ancient times, believed to be as a worship to Dionysos, the God of Wine and Feast.  In the Orthodox tradition Apokries is the preparation period before Lent. Apokries means literally saying goodbye to meat  -  Apoxh apo kreas -  apo-kreas.  In Latin the roots of the word Carnival has the same meaning - 'carne' is meat and 'vale' goodbye.

Apokries runs for three weeks immediately preceding Lent.

In 2019 Apokries runs from Sunday 17th February to Sunday 10th March, while Clean Monday ('Kathara Deftera' or 'Kathari Deftera') falls on Monday 11th March 2019.

We will instead be observing - Tłusty czwartek, which means Fat Thursday in Polish.

It means you pig out on doughnuts ...

Feeling left out: Well fasting is serious business, you can join in too if you wish

Brexit: Greek Foreign Ministry Q&A website for UK nationals ...

Despite Mrs May being tied up in knots ...

The Greek Foreign Ministry has launched a Q&A website for UK nationals.

The site addresses several crucial issues, like the need for a visa for short-term and long-term visitors, residence and work permit, healthcare, criteria to obtain Greek citizenship and others like elections.

Its aimed at the options of ...

If the Withdrawal Agreement enters into force:

or

In case of no deal (absence of withdrawal agreement):

So far no option for a delay, peoples vote, or waiting for an election in the UK, to put the cat amongst the feral pigeons.

In the matter of voting until you get the right answer.(EU prefered option) Remember when the Greek people voted against austerity and a bailout, and to ultimately exit the EU with a firm OXI? but it was impossible to exit due to their debt level & being a member of the common currency. So their PM disregarded the referendum results & kept Greece in the EU/EuroArea.

Sounds like a plan ...

Wouldn’t work in the U.K. would it ...

Protection of UK Citizens' Rights in Greece ...

'British Ambassador to Athens Kate Smith on Tuesday hailed a letter sent earlier in the day by Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Katrougalos to his UK counterpart, Jeremy Hunt, vowing to safeguard the rights of Britons living in Greece after Brexit.

“Delighted that the Greek Government has confirmed that in the event of no deal the rights of UK nationals already living in Greece will be fully recognized and guaranteed, in line with the reciprocity offered by the UK to EU citizens,” Smith said in a post on Twitter on Tuesday.

In the letter, Katrougalos described the UK nationals currently living in Greece as “an important bridge of friendship between our two countries,” stressing that they are always “welcome.”

“Their rights will be fully recognized and safeguarded,” the letter said, adding that fast-track legislation is in the works to ensure that UK citizens residing in Greece “can remain in the country and continue to live, study and work here, as well as to enjoy social security and healthcare benefits” in the event that Britain leaves the European Union on March 29.

Katrougalos added that legislation is also been drafted for UK citizens who settle in Greece after Brexit'

Dear Colleague,

Thank you for your letter of 23 January 2019 on the Protection of Citizens' Rights following the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
The UK has been a key and precious partner of Greece within the EU family and its absence will really be felt. However, we respect the decision of the British people and we are ready to continue to develop our strategic partnership in all areas of mutual interest. In this context, we welcome the position of the UK government that the UK is leaving the EU but not Europe.

We believe that the Retirement Agreement is the only way to ensure a coordinated and uninterrupted withdrawal, as well as legal security for both public authorities and for citizens and businesses. The Reconciliation Agreement can also fully ensure the protection of our Citizens' Rights, which remains the top priority of our two countries.

For that reason, we strongly advocated, during the negotiations on the Reconciliation Agreement, the adoption of a more generous approach to safeguarding the rights of EU citizens and the UK and their family members. In the UK, there is an important Greek community as well as a large British community in Greece, and we hope that both will continue to enjoy the benefits and privileges they had before leaving. That is why we firmly support the need to ratify the Retirement Agreement before 29 March 2019.

However, ratification remains uncertain and we have to prepare for the possibility of a withdrawal scenario without agreement, in close cooperation with the EU and other Member States. In this case too, Citizens' Rights are the overriding priority and our aim is to ensure that both Greek and British citizens who choose to live, study and work in the UK and Greece respectively will continue to they do it unhindered and enjoy fully, if not the same, rights they enjoy before leaving.

We welcome announcements by the UK Government on the use of the EU Plan for European nationals (acquiring established citizen status) in case of disagreement, and for clarity and legal security provided to all categories of EU citizens.

=================================

Dear Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Jeremy Hunt,

Allow me to assure you that the British citizens already living in Greece are welcomed and enjoyed our appreciation and are a major bridge of friendship between our two countries. Their rights will be recognized and fully safeguarded in accordance with the reciprocity offered by the UK to EU citizens. Our state agencies are working without delay on drafting fast track bills that will be voted in due time before March 29, 2019 and will enable British citizens and members of their families already living in Greece prior to the date of retirement (29 March 2019) to remain in the country and continue to live, study and work, and enjoy take social security benefits and health care.
The aim of our national bills is also to provide for the categories of citizens who will arrive in Greece after the date of departure (29.3.2019). I have already consulted my colleagues, the competent ministers, and I intend to make a public announcement soon. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close co-ordination with all other government agencies and agencies, remains at the disposal of the British Embassy in Athens and your government departments.

I look forward to continuing and strengthening our excellent cooperation in the various areas that link our two countries and I hope to meet in the near future.

Yours sincerely,

George Katrougalos »

Greek Exports ...

I went to Lidl today ...

Its French week, this week ...

Thought I would see if there is a £4.99 bottle of Chateau Neuf de ****. Well much to my surprise, there was a display rack full of unwanted Greek delicacies, leftover from last week. Halva lego bricks, sunflower seeds in chocolate, and packets of balaclava frisbees.

Even a case of Nemea 2016, and a few bottles of drain cleaner disguised as Retsina.

Chateau Gutrot 2016 ...
Now this Nemea has been raved about, so against my better judgement. I went down the coat lining, and amongst the fluff, was enough spare change to treat SWMBO ...

Well it was Friday its five to five ...

All I can say is, there is Nemea, and there is Nemea ...

Like the Italians, the Greeks probably keep the best stuff, and export the rest. Needless to say it does not travel well, like those funny green bottles, that were also left sitting on the wall ...

But if it makes you happy, like taking photos of the loos on Skiathos, good for you ...

Lousy weather ...

Strong winds and rain ...

Winter bites back as the weather system “Chioni” arrived in Greece today, bringing gale-force northerly winds reaching up to 9-10 on the Beaufort scale, as well as plunging temperatures with many parts of the country falling below zero.

According to the National Observatory of Athens weather service meteo, the lowest temperatures outside of ski resorts were recorded in Agios Pavlos in Imathia (-5.8C), Vlasti in Kozani (-5.6C), Kleisoura in Kastoria (-4.9C) and Pertouli in Trikala (-4.4C).

The low temperatures have been accompanied by rain and snow at higher altitudes, as well as storms in Egio and other coastal areas, especially in Thessaly, Eastern Central Greece, the Peloponnese and Aegean Sea.

The phenomena is expected to become more intense on the eastern mainland, Southeast Aegean and Crete this afternoon.

The rain is expected to continue until Thursday morning before gradually subsiding, but strong winds will continue to blow in the Aegean.

Ferry services were disrupted this morning due to the high winds.

Passengers planning to travel on Wednesday and Thursday are advised to contact local port authorities or their travel agent before setting out, in case of possible cancellations or modifications of scheduled departures.

Skopelite Ale ...

The beer of Skopelos - Kostas Lechis, the brewery, launches the "Spiro" ...

Kostas Lemonis, 31 years old from Skopelos, is a nomad brewer, a Hellenic nomadic brewery, who since April of the year has launched the first skilful, unfiltered fresh beer called "Spiro". The owner of the homonymous microbrewery, the first in the Northern Sporades, dared to make his dream come true, betting on craft beer.

The islander entrepreneur, who graduated from the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus, immediately after completing his military obligations, returned to his hometown, where a "cocktail" bar was set up six years ago. the alleys of Hora in Skopelos. Kostas Leasing's beer was aired about two years ago. "In the beginning I was making amateur beer in my house. As an eco-breeder or home brewer, as it is otherwise. That's how the story started. A little earlier I had visited some small breweries in Greece, such as Atheneo, an experimental microbrewery created by Athenian Brewery. From there I was inspired and in the spring of 2017 I made my first beer alone"

A year later he went on to professionally produce beer craft. Craft is called beer produced in traditional breweries, which are small and independent of large funds. Kostas Lemonis was thus found at the premises of "Microbreweries of Thessaly" by Yannis Riganisis in Palaia Volos, where the first quantities of "Spira" were produced.

The name of the product was derived from a young Skopelite walk in Thessaloniki. "Behind the Rotunda, I spotted one day a small café with the same name. I liked it. He immediately seemed to be making me, how much even since the spiral is a symbol of power and energy, "he said, and then revealed how the beer brand was inspired:" I used to have a t-shirt that depicted a plan with two punches. It comprised the Good and the Bad and had a daisy and a lightning on each side. I thought it would be interesting to put a hops and an ear, so our logo came out. "

In the tasty palette of "Spiro" there are four labels: Golden Ale, IRA, Weiss and Dry Stout, while in the plans of Kostas Leasing there is also a recipe based on a famous product produced in Skopelos: "There is a black beer recipe that will be used for Skopelos plums. It is still at an experimental stage apart from the four labels we are now circulating. "

Then the inspirer of the ambitious venture described the first steps of Spirala: "The Spiral was officially released in early April 2018. The first productions were then found on the market, along with the beginning of the previous summer season. At the same time the operation of the homonymous brewery on the island began. A privately owned space that sells our products exclusively. The four beer styles that one can try from a barrel. At the same time it is a place of education where we strive to bring the world to the craft culture. "

As to whether it is worth it? Kostas Lemission said unequivocally: "It seemed that there was room for us. There were so many people, mostly foreign tourists, who wanted to taste our beer. In 2018 we bottled ten tons of beer and sold almost nine. We also do wholesale sales to other stores that partner in the Northern Sporades Islands, but also to selected locations in Athens. "

Having his love for beer, but mostly working with patience and perseverance, his plans for the future include several things: "In the Sporades we started first, but we hope not to be alone. It is a blessing to have others and bring the world into contact with good beer. For 2019 we are betting on bigger production and similar opening in Skiathos and Alonissos, as well as the beginning of a brewery in downtown Athens from spring onwards. And by 2021 we can "run" a small unit on the island. "

THOMAS COOK PUTS IN-HOUSE AIRLINE UP FOR SALE AFTER INCREASED LOSSES
The carrier made a profit of over £6 per passenger in the last financial year

Simon Calder Travel Correspondent
@SimonCalder

Thomas Cook, which has just announced increased first-quarter losses, says it will consider all options for its flying business “to enhance value to shareholders and intensify our strategic focus”.

The tour operator stressed that flights will continue as normal and that any deal will require the buyer to provide the same level of carrying capacity for package holidays.

The airline operates in the UK, the Nordic nations and Germany, where it uses the Condor brand. It is a mid-sized carrier with 103 aircraft, flying around 20 million customers a year to 120 destinations – mostly in Europe but with long-haul operations particularly across the Atlantic.

Unlike some other airlines of a similar scale, Thomas Cook Airlines is in reasonably good health. It made a profit per passenger of over £6 in the most recent financial full year.

Just under half of its capacity is currently used by the tour operation arm for providing seats for package holidaymakers. The remainder is sold to other holiday firms or direct to travellers.

A sale would help Thomas Cook to reduce its debt, currently at £1.59bn, and accelerate its strategy of differentiation by opening exclusive hotels. This summer it will open 20 new own-brand hotels.

Thomas Cook's underlying loss for the first quarter, covering October to December, rose by £14 million to £60 million.

Margins were lower, which Thomas Cook said reflected “the highly competitive market conditions in the UK at the end of the summer season, and weaker demand for winter holidays in the Nordics”.
Strong demand for Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia is offsetting weaker demand for Spain.

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook’s chief executive, said: “As expected, the knock-on effect from the prolonged summer heatwave and high prices in the Canaries have impacted customer demand for winter sun.

“Bookings for summer 2019 reflect some consumer uncertainty, particularly in the UK, and our decision to reduce capacity which will both mitigate risk in our tour operator business and help our airline to consolidate the strong growth achieved last year.”

Bookings for the summer of 2019 are 12 per cent down, reflecting a capacity cut aimed at reducing exposure and shoring up prices – which are 4 per cent higher overall.

Mr Fankhauser said: “Some customers appear to be putting off bookings because of concerns about Brexit.” But he told The Independent: “We are really confident we will be able to offer high-quality holidays even in the event of a no-deal Brexit.”

"Maria was born on the island of Papadiamantis 45 years ago and when she first recovered the light she did not cry. The midwife who caused her to panic, struck her head abruptly, causing her visual nerve to become blind. So she learned that the world is bright through the eyes of her soul.

From there she saw her green island, the form of her beloved mother - her support in her life so far - her friends, the sea, the sun and the moon. She attended courses in a special school in Volos and with the code Braille managed to study psychology, to learn computers, foreign languages and when she reached the age of maturity she rented a booth on old harbour of Skiathos.

"By the touch I managed to know all the banknotes. From the adjoining stores they come and give me 100 and 500 euro banknotes to see if they are forged. I'm working on the cash register at incredible speed and never, but I've never made a mistake. I never felt disadvantageous and I did not allow anyone to see me like that, "she tells us.

Maternity

Seeing her sister and her girlfriends have had children, she wanted herself to become a mother. With the support of her mother, relatives and friends, she started a fight titanium, as a single parent had to overcome a series of bureaucratic and other processes. Beside her in this effort the doctor, gynecologist-obstetrician of Volos, Giorgos Christodoulou, whom she constantly thanks.

After two unsuccessful attempts at a known IVF in Athens, she managed to get pregnant, and about 4 months ago, on September 25, 2018, she brought a baby boy and a baby girl to the world.

"I had an easy pregnancy, but a very difficult birth. Babies were born underweight and I presented complications. It took a Super Puma helicopter to take us to Volos. I was constantly thinking that I had no right to "go" and I promised I would fight to strengthen the Health Center on our island, "he says.

Today, when the children have grown a little, Maria Kavouri comes in front of the battle of municipal elections and then the "yes" to the head of the association, Thodoris Tzoumas, prepares a program of visits to all houses, all services while envisioning the next day "for a Skiathos that will not have to envy any of the big islands". Its priority is the health sector, because, as it says, "winter is difficult for those who stay here, while in the summer, thousands of tourists come on holiday, there are more deficiencies". Its everyday life is not easy, but it is very pleasant. By mid-day babies are taking care of herself as her mother works as a cleaning lady in the kindergarten. By touch it can respond to everything,

She "sees" and jeers her children and dreams of being strong and good. "I want the children to stand on their feet as I did because I had no choice. I do not want to fear anything. I say my children are my eyes, but I do not mean that I brought them to the world to take care of me. I know how it is and I've never seen it. They are beautiful and cheerful. As I dreamed of them. "

Marvelous designs

She speaks incessantly about her children but also about her plans for the island. "Coastal isolation is a serious problem We are so close to Volos and often in winter we are offline. The airport, which in summer has dozens of flights every day in the winter, only serves access to and from Athens. Skiathos should become a destination all year round. Not to die in the winter, it is not nice to see the beach in Chora where all the shops are closed. Entrepreneurs must come here to invest in tourism, and not only, to respect the environment of the island and its people, she says" ...

Congratulations to Maria and her new family ...

The EU has agreed to allow UK citizens visa-free travel to the continent - even after a no-deal Brexit.

EU ambassadors agreed on Friday that UK citizens travelling to the bloc's borderless Schengen area - made up of 26 European countries - should be granted visa-free travel for a short stay.

This is defined as 90 days in any 180 days.

A document detailing the proposal states: "Considering the geographical proximity, the link between economies, the level of trade and the extent of short-term movements of persons between the UK and the Union for business, leisure or other purposes, visa-free travel should facilitate tourism and economic activity, thereby bringing benefits to the Union."

The decision will now be passed to the European Parliament, who last month supported visa-free travel even in the event of a no-deal Brexit, to pass into legislation.

The UK government welcomed the news, but a row threatened to blow up after Gibraltar was referred to as "a colony of the British Crown" in a footnote on the same document.

Reportedly inserted at the request of Spain, a footnote states: "Gibraltar is a colony of the British Crown. There is a controversy between Spain and the United Kingdom concerning the sovereignty over Gibraltar, a territory for which a solution has to be reached in light of the relevant resolutions and decisions of the General Assembly of the United Nations."

Negotiations are ongoing ...

A technical glitch during the BBC News at Six appeared to show Theresa May heading off to Brussels in a Second World War era Spitfire aeroplane. A fault the editor blamed on “human error” showed images of the iconic aircraft landing and flying in formation while a presenter talked of Theresa May’s plans to travel to Brussels to renegotiate her Brexit deal.
