Small Planet Airline & Charter Flight Centre ...

Both have gone into insolvency in the last few days ...

Small Planet airline:

Lithuania-based Small Planet Airlines has followed its German and Polish subsidiaries in filing for insolvency.

Small Planet, based in Vilnius, claimed it recorded “a successful and profitable operational performance” this year.

It said it had been forced to declare insolvency to restructure free of creditors’ demands after the group’s subsidiary operations in Poland and Germany filed for insolvency last month.

In a statement, Small Planet described the filing as “a vital step to protect its business”

All change with the clocks ..

Fall back one hour ...

Perhaps for the last time?

In case you are having a few problems this morning, (well it is still dark out there) Here is a handy guide, that may help you synchronise your time devices.

As you put the clocks back an hour tonight please spare a thought for the guys having to move the stones at Stonehenge, back one hour in this weather ...

Readers in the Americas are a little confused, as they change their clocks next weekend. We in Europe are used to them arriving late for important events ...

Off now to see the sunrise, somewhere really special. Well as long as my watch is right on time, and I don't trip over anything in the dark ...

Enjoy OXI day wherever you are ...

I thought it was the cheese dreams, after last night's pizza. At least the pickling jars are safe, serious concerns raised,  following the mass interest in Tsitsiravlo on tripadvisor, since the flying visit post *photo 6*

I have a great curing method, for fresh kolios fish, makes a fantastic meze, and keeps in the fridge in oil for a month. I know where to get decent tsipouro, and Matt knows a neighbour with a 15 foot tree, and access to the product concerned ...

Perhaps an export market opens. (Order early for Christmas 2019 deliveries) Answers on the comments section below, or if technically challenged, you know where to look ...

Skiathos trail run - Half Marathon & 10k race ...

If you missed out on the event, due to the change of date, caused by the bad weather. It took place on Sunday 21st October. The organisers have now released a video, of the event ...

You can see it on the YouTube link here ...

Meanwhile another event took place yesterday ...

Ortwin's walking group, have been walking the island the last week or so. Captain Michaelis hosted them on one occasion down in Koukounaries - where the party continued into the road, where usually at this time of the year, its just his sheep.

This time they were rocking Palio limani, with their version of the Oktoberfest. They were at Spiros place, Ladoukala, enjoying a bite to eat and probably a decent weiss beer or two.

Ortwin on the accordion and quite a sing along taking place, as his guests from Germany joined in.

(Video to follow here in due course)

Certainly livened the place up, and along with a plate smash, very good it was too ...

No sign yet ...

of those forecasted storms ...

But it does look a bit lively over towards Italy on the lightning radar this morning. A few light showers yesterday, which did not deter the 200 or so Polish tourists from the mainland, visiting town and Koukounaries from the mainland ...

Persuaded SWMBO to have a coffee, and later floated the idea of a tsipouro afterwards, as the sun was out. (Request swiftly denied, as it was the morning after the 21 seater the night before)

Various suggestions of what to have for a late lunch, came and went. However tempting it was to see Spiros for a take away, I said I preferred fish. Perhaps shrimps, but its Sunday and the trawlers are tied up.

Then the seed, germinated earlier, and much to my surprise, suddenly flowered and bloomed.

SWMBO said 'I fancy the fried codfish, with that garlic sauce, but what would JUNIOR have? A swift response there from the budding artist, of 'Kalimari chips and tsatsiki' ...

Not hungry at all then?

Picked myself up off the floor, and that was that ...

Two very nice fried bakalarios, skordalia (potato based version) kalimari chips and tsatsiki, and my tsipouro meze.

Koutsomoures with Melitzanosalata (delicious) in the sun at Kamporelias ...

Which I was more than very pleased with, as I am sure you fully understand, as was SWMBO & JUNIOR, with theirs ...

Flying visit ...

To Loutraki ...

It's the port which we know as Glossa, over on Skopelos. Glossa is the village up on the hill around 200m above the port, which you can see from Skiathos.

Loutraki is where the flying dolphin, the car ferries and the flying cat, make their first call on Skopelos. If you are here in summer, you can catch the bus, across the island to the Mamma Mia (2008 film) beaches, the third port Agontas and Skopelos town.

I had a call to say, 'let's go to Loutraki' so after a split second, 'why not let's go ...

The rendezvous point was Siferi, the old boatyard. A few minutes later we were away at high speed. Skimming over the waves, heading towards the big island. Leaving behind the Skiathos sunshine for a rather cloudy Skopelos.

Once out on the open sea, the North breeze, made for bumpy but not too uncomfortable conditions. Twenty minutes later entering the port. Windswept, salt sprayed and hungry ...

Now many of you say Skiathos is dead in winter. Even though you may have not tried it. (Tourists from Germany still here) There was a visitng yacht, and a couple of the crew watching our arrival. Watching our arrival manouveres, with a critical eye, as yachties like to do ...
Well if you want a village with tumbleweed, this probably is it. A couple of fishermen, who pretended we did not exist. Shuttered hotels and houses, and a very noisy and despite looking well fed, but seemingly hungry, attention seeking cat ...

The square had a coffee shop, one customer, again oblivious of our presence. However the cafe owner, a lovely lady pointed us in the right direction. Just happened to be the one I suggested twenty minutes earlier, from a previous out of season visit, for a baptism. You may remember it ...

The taverna next to the bakery (12 loaves awaiting a home), also were quite surprised to see us. A table occupied by some more 'xenos' (strangers) perhaps another visiting yacht crew, or expats keeping themselves to themselves.

All handed menus, I said 'whats that for'? As it's highly unlikely it would have anything available from the full menu. Everyone surveying the menu, I looked at the last item, on the last page.

'Tsipouro with titbits' translation = small plate/meze ...

That took about 30 seconds for my vote to be carried by the committee. One fanta, two tsipouro, and three Ouzo mezes. The kitchen back on full time apart from the gyros.

A variety of delicious meze plates ...

We did ask for some more bread, luckily the bakery was still open :) I am sure the boss nipped out PDQ.

Three plates later, a very smooth ride back from Skopelos, to 'the rock' and you bump into another mate, and a banter across the water.

'Where have you been, where are you going' etc ...

The engine fires up and dies, add fuel. 'Taxi is that tsipouro or fuel'? Sniffs tank - 'Petrol Ioannis' much laughter.

Much more friendly island Skiathos, and the Skiathities ...

On the beach ...

Around eight of us ...

That's if you include the two in the water, swimming across the bay.

Along comes someone walking the shoreline, and obviously very important, as they were on the mobile. Then stops almost next to me, and keeps on gabbling away.

After about five minutes, walks away about 50m and stands looking out to sea, gabbling away, in front of two guys who are sitting on the sand.

Then starts another robotic walk along the shoreline, in the process, taking with him someones fishing line. He could even chat hopping on one foot, with his foot wrapped in nylon. A robotic ballet ...

Then after about 100m, turns round, and comes back. It was that Monty Python moment where we start searching for stones, or to cast the Nokia, as far as the eye can see ...

The beach is about 500m long, so if you exclude the swimmers, we have about 100m each. But we get him to shatter our peace and quiet, and in the way of the sunset ...

Stressed perhaps after the call, does a few press ups, and some sunset yoga, for our benefit. Wearing Speedos and one of those little 'pork pie' hats ...

Tips for encountering a mobile broadcaster:

If someone starts a telephone conversation, speaking loudly, with their phone on speaker (Seems to be the fashion now) just get out a notepad and pen, catch their eye and start taking notes.

Works a treat ...

Of course, if you are a budding 007, spend a few minutes trying to work out who this person is employed by, then use some Google app to work out who their main competitor is. Perhaps mention you work for them when the first question comes your way.

Trains are good, someone exited a train carriage at London Bridge. Having loudly thanked a phone user for inadvertently including all passengers in his conversation. In addition offering them the opportunity for insider dealing ...

Sat on the bus once, a guy happily read all his credit card details loudly down the phone and the magic number.

Earth tremors and heating oil ...

Small rumbles early on Sunday morning ...

The tremors were recorded after midnight in the nearby city of Volos and on Skiathos.

Initially, at 00:26 was recorded an earthquake of 2.3 on the Richter scale - 26 miles North-Northeast of Skiathos, while the focal depth was detected at 10 km.
Then at 04:00 in the morning there was a new earthquake of 2.2 on the Richter scale 26 km West – Southwest of Volos, again with a focal depth of 10 km.

Mr Tsipouro returning home perhaps?

Heating Oil:

With 1,13-1,14 euros in the cheaper stations in the Attica region, but the price expected to exceed 1.2 euro in mountainous and island areas of the country today available in the Greek market, this years heating oil. (Taxydromos.gr)

Cheese and wine ...

I have emerged from a cloud of dust ...

My ears are still ringing from the kango drill.  Either that of I have tinnitus, and have fallen in a flour pot. Still it's been an eventful few days, of bash and crash, clearing up the dust and some stunning sunsets after a swim.

The weather has turned, rain showers, grey skies and quite a chop in the harbour, this morning.

Not a good time to find your cheese, has frozen solid in the fridge, as its still on summer setting. Or that the crisps, a friend gave you on the beach, as they were 'too salty' for them, actually are.

Still the glass of red really was just as i like it, whilst the Cheese defrosts ...

Met some lovely people, winding down after the summer madness. Including a really nice gentleman, of senior years who is off to Australia tomorrow.

Thanasis (call me arthur) is off to Athens, then to Dubai and on to Sydney. Hopefully event free, as he is a little unsteady. Was great to spend some time chatting with him, before his great trip ...

Mr Tsipouro is in fine form, and enjoying his time 'on the rock' before jumping on the Express Skiathos to Volos and bus to Thessaloniki to continue his october adventures.

Maenwhile today there was a big baptism, as well as a wedding taking place ...

Rumours are rife that some new 5* hotels are going to be built, following the success of the Hotel Elivi (formerly the Xenia) at Koukounaries.

Must say having seen the Elivi, first hand, its stunning, and very well laid out into the landscape. Had a view the other day, and for me its the best accomodation on the island.

Suites behind Ambelakia ...

Further development, has now started, to expand the resort for next year, along with staff accomodation, at the base of the hill, where the bus turns around.

If I had the pocket money, and was visiting, then the suites overlooking Ambelakia, would certainly be on my radar ...

Looking towards Banana, there are different type of suites set in the olive grove ...

Seems the cheese has just about defrosted, a fine layer of dust falling on the glass of red, like the autumn leaves. Enjoy your evening wherever you are Καλό βραδυ ...

Well had a quick chat with friends of the blog, Alison & Duncan (Dionnisis) who comment here time to time. They asked me what was going on down at Tarsanas  taverna (The real one, not the Kechria version)

I do not know, but they took some really good photos, which will inspire me to go and take a look.

It was a quick chat, as I had to nip off PDQ for a swim ...

There is a nip in the water after the medicane, but that is to be expected. Anyway we had the beach to ourselves before, a German family and some after work locals popped along.

But after a swim, where i bumped into my neighbours, i was sitting enjoying the late afternoon sun. A cold can of FIX, and this view ...

Of a cruise liner this year ...

The Marella Discovery 2, and around 1800 passengers heading ashore, to wander the streets, looking for bargains in the end of season sales ...

Some of the stores closed the day before, seems no one talks to each other.

The coffee shops were doing very well. One even called a customer to work, as trade was so brisk. Plenty of visitors, and islanders enjoying the very warm autumn sunshine.

Some headed off on the bus to Koukounaries, on the new autumn timetable.

Tables with shade, much sought after, and a lot warmer in the sun, than the 22 degrees on the apps.

However not the only nice boat in town, a luxury yacht arrived at the same time ...

Must have thought we have the quay all to themselves. That was until the tenders started ferrying in the visitors ...

Change the clocks, or not ...

Confusion remains regarding the time change, and many wonder if it will change or not. Well the clocks will change this October, as it has every year.

On Sunday 28th of October we will change our clocks, from summer to winter time. Although it seems that that may actually be the last time, we change the clocks in Autumn.

'The proposal of the EU commission is that it will be abolished, and the change in time to cease to be in force in the European Union from April 2019. Each EU member state should choose by the end of April 2019, if it keeps daylight saving or standard time, since the EU ratified the plan to put an end to the seasonal time changes in 2019, clarified by the European Commission today. If the proposed timetable from Brussels, is respected, the time change, on 31 March 2019 will be the last mandatory passage to daylight saving time in the EU states. The countries who wish to return permanently to winter time will then have the option to change it one last time on 27 October 2019, then the seasonal time changes will no longer be possible' Not sure where that leaves the UK, on permanent British Summer time, or Greenwich mean time, as UK has the meridian line not Paris (By international treaty since October 1884). Or if UK stays on wobbly EU time for another six months or even two years. At least we now know why Mr 'Junker bomber' says UK planes may not be allowed to land in the EU after 29th March 2019. Can you imagine what the timetables will look like, even with or without the fuel stop ...

This plan must have been thought up on the hangover from hell ... There must be an opportunity for an aspiring UK politician, to charge the EU £39billion, for walking away from the mother of all time zones. Perhaps even offer a transitional deal? Bet the PM is a remainder on time zones, but will respect the will of the people, well you know, sort of ... I wonder if Nicola Sturgeon-(Kranky) has consulted the PM and Brussels on this, perhaps they will stay on a Norwegian option.

Thanks to Trevor for the cartoon ...
However as the 28th October is Oxi day in Greece, expect a firm Oxi from Athens on this, and just about anything else ...

Where has ...

Everyone gone ...

Its very quiet this morning ...

Just the sound of silence, in the village. Yesterday the last of the Brits went home. The Germans, some Scandanavians, and of course the yachties still remain for some time yet.

Not that the 350 or so departing holidaymakers, wanted to go, but as far as the major tour ops go. That will do for us, thank you very much. Certainly In town, there could be a few more weeks left in the season, and island small businesses prepared to support it. Just need an independent airline prepared to exploit, the gap in the market ...

Tomorrow there should be a cruise liner visiting, as well as the tour boats from Platanias on the mainland. Some more euros, in the till for the hard working islanders, and the coming winter ahead.

Those who departed yesterday, are missing lilac skies, as the darkness gives way to a soft morning light. The chug of the fishing boats, and the sound now of the starlings, as they start their own version of the dawn chorus, now that the swallows and swifts have also departed 'the rock' ...

Perhaps the tour operators are trying to follow the migrating birds calendar. They have not quite followed it, or they would be here in April, with the spring sunshine, and what was the driest month of the year.

The coffee of course, as always, is very welcome this morning, listening to background chill out music, and thinking of my mother who passed away on this day, what seems so many years ago.

Will light a candle at the church, as I do every year. It always seems the right thing to do ...

If you are still here, tomorrow ...

The Civil Defence alarms will sound throughout Greece on Tuesday, October 9, as part of the Parmenion 2018 exercise.  The alarm activation will have a purely testing purposes, and therefore there is 'no reason for confusion or concern' ...

At 11.00 in the morning, it will sound the 'air attack' alarm, for a duration of 60 seconds, with an 'intermittent sound of a different intensity'

At 11.05 there will be the 'All clear' alarm ending for a duration of 60 seconds as well, with a 'steady-state continuous sound'

Traffic lights ...

The need for traffic lights on the Skiathos Regional Road is immediate.

It is a common finding of residents and visitors of the island that there is a high risk of pedestrians and vehicles on the Skiathos Ring Road, especially in the summer months and especially at the intersections, some of which have no visibility.

The problem is compounded by the high speed of vehicles and the violation of the entire Road Traffic Code, such as parking in turns and even in unobstructed bends. With residential development, the urban fabric has expanded well beyond the Ring Road, which is integrated into the city's life and is constantly being crossed by pedestrians, children and the elderly. The Cultural Association of Skiathos stresses "how the competent authorities should take measures to regulate traffic"

The Board of Directors of the Cultural Association of Skiathos, having investigated the matter, has submitted to the competent body, the Municipality of Skiathos, a document stating the problem and asking for the placing of traffic lights on the following particularly dangerous road junctions:

1. Coastal junction with ring road. Of particular importance, as the Primary School is next to it.
2. Crossing at the Delta.
3. Crossroads of the Korai, Nea Odos and Regional streets.
4. Crossing the Papadiamantis and Regional streets. There is also an exit from an informal parking lot.
5. Saint Fanouriou and Regional crossroads. At the last three intersections there is a lack of visibility. A serious problem is also being created (traffic jam) in New Street

As an observer the traffic lights at the airport, are widely ignored. If you can ignore an incoming aircraft, well whats a tourists Jimny in comparison?  Parking on the designated 'safer places to cross the road' is widespread, and expected if you need to get to the coffee shop in a hurry as tourism is all but over ....
If this plan takes off, the first few days should be an interesting spectacle, as cars get rear ended by those who know better, passing scooters and the colourblind ...

Raised some comment ...

Its the start of a process, as the council (Dimos) declared (Quite rightly) a state of emergency, following the extreme weather that affected the island, its people, its businesses, and its property owners.

It allows access to funds, via the regional authority to assist in repairs.

Like everything in Greece, it will no doubt, require numerous visits to offices, lots of papers, official stamps, inspections, receipts, and officials to be dealt with over the next few months.

It will be a long and painful process for all involved. But it is not bullshit - as some suggested, from behind their keyboard ...

If you have comments about what happened over on Skopelos, then they will best be posted over on the SkopelosNews site as they will know best about that. After all they experienced it.

Yes I know its election year, yes I know how some things happen. But lets not knock our friends on the island who are in some cases very badly affected by what has happened.

Many tourists want to help, hopefully a fund raising page will be set up to help the locals recover. Those who love the island, this will not stop them from returning to Skiathos. and can be relied upon to be back next year.

Lets support them, as best we can, as they have a tough time ahead ...
