Summer is back ...

After the monsoon ...

I reckon it will be a scorcher for at least a few weeks, after that downpour.

If you are up and about early, No I am aware its not easy after a glass or two the night before, but you can be rewarded ...

Here are a couple of island friends, the one on the right likes his mane to be stroked between his ears. However also likes to show his teeth. But someone said, he could be smiling ...

I have been stopped a few times lately and not just by Donkeys seeking my attention ...

A very beautiful young lady, stopped me, and asked me where we had met. She said I know you, but cant remember where from. I was captivated and a gabbling wreck. I have no idea at all, but thats the thing with age ...

I said to her 'I try not to look at beautiful Skiathos women, It could get me into a lot of trouble'

SWMBO was laughing, and saying dont worry, you can have him, if I can have the bank details instead.

Now there is an offer ...

That was quite a night ...

History is repeating itself ...

Ten years ago today, a storm greeted SWMBO's first arrival for a holiday 'on the rock' on August 28th ...

I opened the door of the house to be met by a grumpy chap, from a certain place up north. Who like me was surveying the roaring tide running down the street.

He said 'Bloody weather' ...

I said to him, the island needs it, and after all, it stops the island burning down, and its why we have a green island in the aegean to enjoy ...

The response was "not when im on bloody holiday" ...

So far everyone i have met from that part of the world, seems to be in the 'miserable b*****d category' and no one seems to be able to change my opinion on that, from further encounters.

Later that day we were frying in the sun, at the bourtzi and misery guts, was still whinging on a nearby table.

The moral of the story, is that for the next two weeks it was a scorcher.

The last 24 hours, has been rough, last night its been pretty grim. It will probably be better later.

If you are reading this in departures, or packing to leave, you will be thinking 'oh dear' ...

At 4am its was a bit lively ...

At 7:35 it was a lot better ..

Its wet and windy and thunderstorm alley in greece is centered here for a change, and should move away in time for todays arrival and departures.

Certainly blowing a 6/7 at the moment and raining now the atmospherics have departed east ...

At least the power is back on, for a cup of tea ...

Welcome back 'to the rock' friend of the blog, Colin have a great time, you could have left the weather at home ...

However will fill you all in with yesterdays adventures at a later date...

Current score Skiathian 107 - Wasps 1.

Last night one of the b******s stung me on the face, whilst having dinner.

A liberable application of tsipouro (internal and external) seems to have saved the day, but still feeling it this morning.

Death to all wasps ...

Who on earth was that ? ...

When you’re walking down a quiet road, its dark, not pitch black because of the white moonlight, from the full moon.

There is nobody around, apart from the two donkeys, which you have befriended. Stroked their noses, rubbed the mane between their ears, which clearly they like very much indeed.

Junior is very upset, as being tall, but of course much shorter than me, does not realise, donkeys have teeth, and they had showed them to me.

Desperately wants to do the same, but no way are small hands, going anywhere near those teeth, so there are tired tears.

So just enjoying the peace. Well apart from the barking Labrador, still warning the hills of your passing by.

The view of the stars, and the red planet Mars. The smell of dry long parched grass, like hay, the scent, of night flowers, and perhaps herbs on the breeze. You hear a low hum of an approaching engine, from the rear ...

The lights illuminate the area, No need to look back, you just stand to the side, and let it pass by ...

There is a friendly toot, and a 'Kalinichta Ioannis' as the creaking suspension of the pick up rumbles by.

You can't help, but say out loud, 'who on earth was that' ...

Amazing light ...

... at the start of the day.

Indigo skies, giving way to a light pastel blue. A gentle breeze, and lilac hues as distant hills come into view.

The first flies and wasps appear as the warm air rejuvenates them, after the night. Twinkling goat bells, and cockrels calling, to the left and right.

A passing jet, high overhead, as does a leisurely crow, from right to left ...

The dawn chorus, includes a number of dogs, calling out to distant canine friends, near and far.

The buzz of an airborne mosquito, drowned out, by the roar, of piston engines, as the Olympic flight departs for Athens.

23rd August 1944 ...

On this day 74 exactly years ago, scenes of atrocity and death came to Skiathos.

Here the place and the inhabitants lived on the day this horror and terror that came in the dawn of 22 to 23 August 1944,

The Nazis with the militia, their Greek partners,  attacked the island, just before the day broke, to punish civilian residents, for the capture of Northern Aegean German Commander Joseph Adler, on August 12th, by Resistance.

Adler, was an official of the Nazi party, fuelling terror and robbed the islands and the sporadítes people gave him the nickname mileoúnē, from the mileoúnia, i.e. the millions he was asking for.

The arrest was made at the order of the middle east headquarters in the 54th regiment of elas, which was held in pelion. The German Commander was arrested in a bloodless and character way and moved to Cairo.

On the same day of the arrest of mileoúnē the residents of skiathos, alerted from the ipu, abandoned their homes and hid in the mountains. The Germans learn the commander's abduction and decide hard reprisals against civilians.

The day after the arrest of mileoúnē, there was a raid on the Germans and arrested 18 people. They took them to skopelos and there with actions of local authorities, twelve were released.

They threatened to execute the six who they kept and burn the skiathos, if in ten days Adler is not freed.

The German threats were communicated to the American mission and they replied: ' for the hostages there is nothing we can do. We regret, but unfortunately fate has brought it to pay for them with their lives, andthe need for the allied race.

As for skiathos, let it be destroyed.

We'll rebuild a better post-war "...

The allies haven't kept their promise. Neither the reconstruction of the skiathos reinforced, nor any compensation was paid ti the relatives of the victims.

After ten days in the mountains, the inhabitants began to return to their homes.

On the same night of Tuesday to Wednesday of August 23th, at three in the morning the skiathítes woke up from the hum and chaos, coming from the port.

Skiathos was woken by gunboats in the port, glyphonéri, coves, and, Megali amos. They rang the church bells and yelled at the residents to gather in the port.

They invade the houses, pushing and hitting the occupants, creating terror as they went, from door to door.

All over the beach they had rigged machine guns pointing towards the village. They gathered people at a beach cafe, over 200 people, women, children, elderly and a young man found in the village. "if you don't tell within 5 minutes where the rebels are, we'll blow you up as you are".

But the spirit of resistance had forged high morale and had even made women and children even more aware of the threat of death. They insist on not saying where the men were.

Most of them knew that the Prophet Elijah was a rebel group of rebels (6-7 people, but who could not face the strong German forces, who had come from skopelos and volos). Some German gets instructions by phone from their base in loutraki.

A girl who understands German and hears what they say and they have orders to blow up the store. People freeze in front of the view and in fear of death. They force out the man who keeps his little son in the arms and tells him to put him down.

The father leaves his child with pain. Understanding what was going to happen.

They take him behind the cafe and put him on the wall... Theodósēs Parisi, he was years old and left five orphans.

A new raider comes and looks like he changed the order. "within three minutes to evacuate the cafe because we will start burning the skiathos". they open the doors and the people distraught run to save their homes at the mercy of Nazi laílapas.

The soldiers pouring into the entire village. On street near the mill they kill two young children nineteen years old, leonidas kantarákia and argyris koúkia.

Koúkias, young and strong child fought with the German and knocked him down and maybe killed him. But at that moment another German came and when he saw argyris koúkia beating his colleague, he killed him.

They're starting to bomb the village. They run into neighborhoods and throw in the houses a yellow incendiary powder like sulfur and set fire to skiathos.

They scream and scream. Among them many of the militia, they speak Greek. And they call each other with Greek names, making even greater horror.

The militia dressed in German uniforms. Under Saint Nicolas church a bedridden old lady, lost her life screaming that he couldn't come out and found horrible death in flames.

At the same time, the houses were looted.

Later in the afternoon, a storm broke out, which erased the fire and avoided the village's total destruction.

At Night, the ipu militia erased the remaining fire outbreaks and put guards to protect houses from being looted. The next day there was the funeral of the dead in general mourning and heartbreak.

The Nazis then completed their criminal action. They tied the six hostages behind the ships and drowned them in the sea, to alonissos, sailing to thessaloniki.

So skiathos entered the long series of 1.200 villages and small and large cities, burned by the conqueror, and paid the heavy price of freedom.

The Nazis finally left skopelos and the area area on August 29, 1944

In the burning of the island by the Nazis, the houses burned or damaged by the bombing or burned their household amounted to 359.

Despite the transnational agreements later and the actions of the fire and the families of the victims, no compensation was given by the German state.

This Anniversary marks the great offer of skiathos in national resistance, the mass conscription of her children in the ranks of elas and the heavy price of freedom, paid on August 23rd by the islanders, on this day 74 years ago ...

Assumption day 15th of August in Greece ...

Today August 15th is a public holiday ...

That means the banks and post office will be closed, and the ATMs hopefully will keep the wheels of summer finance turning.

Greeks all over the country will celebrate one of Christianity’s most significant days, the Dormition of Virgin Mary. Some call this day “the summer Easter” to show the importance of the celebration, and many thousands of people attend religious services throughout the country.

Evagelistria Monastery

It will be the same on Skiathos, with the many Greek visitors heading off to church, before celebrating at the Ouzerias and tavernas.

Today the tide will turn, the Greeks will over the next few days start to head for home. The ferries will be packed to bursting point, Greek friends with businesses say, 'thats it, its over' as they see summer coming to an end.

For the rest of us there are still seven weeks to go ...

Tad Breezy ...

Its Meltemi time of year ...

The Meltemi are otherwise known as the North Winds. The Turkish use the term Meltem, and the Greeks Etesian. These winds are strong dry north winds They are commonly known as the Meltemi winds, and they are found only in the Aegean sea.

These winds come from out of the Balkans and last for days. They usually cool down temperatures and can be a welcome relief in the hot days of July and August, but dealing with them directly can be a challenge, especially for sailors.

They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night, but sometimes Meltemi winds last for days without a break.

When they blow the boat trips are disrupted, and the unknowing tourist, can be heard to say whats the problem? Its just a breeze and its sunny ...

They can churn the waters, making them dangerous for swimmers, and blow sand at the sunbathers on north-facing beaches. On the southern beaches they can go unnoticed, even more of a cause for complaint if your boat trip has been cancelled ...

ATM Fees ...

Charges are back ...

Seems there is now an ATM fee, when you withdraw money from a foreign bank account ...

There’s a fee of between €2 & €3 per transaction. National Bank of Greece was first to charge, a couple of weeks ago, followed by Piraeus bank & Eurobank about a week later. So far Alpha bank are not charging, but expect they will follow soon.

If you are going to withdraw funds, take out a large amount, at least you will benefit from the market rate ...

Later Update: 11th August

Greek banks are charging Greek and foreign holders of debit and credit cards issued abroad 2-3 euros every time they withdraw cash from an ATM.

The new commission fee came into effect at the end of July and was immediately noticed by both tourists and Greeks who have accounts at banks outside Greece.

The banks notify the card holder about the new charge with a message that appears when the person uses a cash machine.

The redesign of the banks’ pricing policy is linked to their efforts to expand their revenue sources at a time when revenues from loan interest are low.

Καλημέρα, και καλό μήνα ...

Good Morning, and Good Month to our Greek friends ...

... and all those who read the blog, from across the world.

Happy August, the quintessential month of Greek summer!

August is the 'nose to tail' month ...

A queue of Jimnys snaking its way down the island as everyone is stuck behind Bert and Doris trundling their way west on a quad. Doris pointing left and right at her favourite landmarks, confusing those behind who think they are indicating. Bert twitching left and right as he takes a look at where back seat Doris is pointing to.

Like a very slow formula one car trying to keep the tyres warm, behind the safety car with screaming transmission.

Only grinding to a halt when they catch up with the bus, but dont dare overtake ...

We say 'Crazy August' has arrived, the month of heat and short tempers is finally upon us. As the heat rises both at home and on the island, you can tell the ones, who have had their Skiathos fix for the year, and those that have not.

The arguments about the price of sunbeds, and that they are being used, and those that say they are not (who were on the island in May). Where to get your kit off, where not to get your kit off,

Where to lay your towel and save €8 (Skopelos probably is the nearest option)  The prices, here there and everywhere. Taxis and buses the price of car hire and where to find a deserted beach (Alonissos next nearest option) in August ...

Is it any wonder half the island friends are in Parga, and the Ionian ?

Its the last few weeks to fill the bank account, for the long winter ahead. So don't expect any island bargains until the sales start in another month.

Someone asked where to play bingo, and they found it - Yes you can do so on the island if you wish to. Best of all someone wants to see Mamma Mia 2, not Mamma Mia here we go again.

Mamma Mia 1 (2008) = Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia 2 (2018) = Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Oh dear ...

You can tell who has been drinking the island water, rather than swimming in it

Only eight weeks left ...
