Dynamic Currency conversion ...

Avoid the rip off ...

Do be careful at the ATM/Cashpoint or when booking airline tickets in a foreign currency. The text on screen is very convincing, Offering you the deal at a set price so you do not have to worry about the fluctuating currency rates.

Its very tempting to accept the deal, but rest assured it will probably not be in your favour.

I was booking some airline tickets yesterday, as they are for a non charter trip, starting from outside the UK. I was offered the Dynamic Currency Conversion as payment was about to go through ...

'If you do not wish to accept the exchange rate please untick the checkbox below. If you untick the checkbox below, the rate you receive from your bank is not guaranteed, and is subject to daily fluctuations, which could result in a significantly higher cost to you.

See Terms and conditions for more information on (Airline name) guaranteed exchange rate.

We recommend you do not untick the checkbox so that you receive our guaranteed exchange rate'

Back in my dark and dimming past, I used to work for a bank ...

Credit card transactions are made at 'market rate' an airline is not a bank. But they will invest my money with a bank at very good rates.

I unchecked the box ...

Horror of Horrors ...

Checked the credit card this morning, that uncheck of the box yesterday, despite the sincere advice above, imploring me not to do so, and the 'guaranteed exchange rate' - saved me £30 ...

So when you have had a glass of vino, and need a few euros for the taxi ride home. Think before you click at the ATM/Cashpoint, That taxi ride could work out much more costly than you think ...

Music off at 3am ...

The police have cracked down on noise ...

Must have found the batteries for the decibel machine ...

All music outside must cease at 3am in the village. It seems the 'rock till village the 6am' music thump has come to an end - at least for now.

3am - No Noise ..
The clubs on club strip were forced to move indoors, so relocated quietly to the bars on the old harbour. The last two years the noise has rocked the village until six in the morning. Bars often booming out the beat, even after the last customer has gone home.

There has been a lot of opposition from the bar owners, and their staff. Who barricaded the police inside their office yesterday to protest at the action. Not least the bar owners who are loosing income now in high season. Then again, they probably do not live in town, so are not trying to sleep, as the party goes on.

Skiathos is changing, its trying to encourage the younger audience, but for now they do not have anywhere to go after 3am. Bananistas is gone, Banana is upmarket, Perhaps Xanemos will be the new club area in the future.

So is it just a token gesture or are the rules to be strictly enforced?

Well we shall see, but for now if the doors are open, then the music must cease at 3am ...

Forest fire on Skopelos ...

A large forest fire was reported over on Skopelos yesterday afternoon ...

Skopelos News are reporting that its located in the area of Amarandos/Agnondas.

'Fire planes have been working for hours to help and stop the fire, and also a helicopter has been seen working. This helicopter has also brought fire fighters from the mainland. The last ferryboat of today will also bring several fire trucks from the mainland and more fire fighters' (Source: Ert1 Greek television)

Its reported that a man was evacuated by army helicopter, suffering with Second-degree burns from the fire, Landing at Volos Military base, and being transfered by ambulance to Volos hospital.

The fire planes stopped working at nightfall, and are expected to return in the morning.  The forecast is for strong winds again, over the next few days, hopefully they can get it under control

Civil protection authorities issued an announcement on Sunday warning of a high fire risk on Monday. They advised citizens and visitors to desist from engaging in any activities that could inadvertently cause a fire, as high temperatures and strong winds can stoke even the smallest blaze.

There was another fire in the area of Agontas in 2008 and 2011 which we could see, the aircraft working from Skiathos. I watched Skiathos burning back in 2007, the effect of the fires is horrific, it can take many years for the area to regenerate, but once the pine forest has gone, sadly only gorse returns in its place ...

Airport News ...

'Foreign flights to the international airport of Skiathos, where more than 15,000 tourists from different countries are expected to land during the week, are expected to go up. The tourist image that is shaped in the heart of this season is encouraging for Skiathos International Airport, which is the main gateway to the international arena for all three islands.

In the week's schedule, 94 flights are recorded, while at the peak of the tourist season, the total number is expected to exceed 100, on a weekly basis, with foreign tourists arriving by air.

This year's image is satisfactory and is totally identical to the views of tourism professionals, who predicted that traffic at Skiathos Airport is expected to show a one-digit growth rate.

"The flow of traffic is normal and we will have an accurate picture at the end of the season," airport airport manager Stefanos Lambropoulos commented, adding that "Skiathos is an international destination." In the meantime, the efforts made by Frapport Greece focus on two directions. The increase of the flights and destinations that are connected by air to Skiathos and at the same time the improvement of the airport image, both operationally and in terms of facilities.

In the planning of the projects concerning Skiathos airport, the renovation of the old terminal, which is already in progress, is recorded, while in the plan of the building upgrading of the airport, the new terminal is also recorded, where the respective interventions are expected to be completed, once the flights abroad. The refurbishment of the new terminal is expected to begin after the end of October, while a series of interventions are under way to provide the best possible service to passengers and the landscaping of the international airport of Skiathos "Alexandros Papadiamantis".

Generally speaking, it is a key hub for incoming tourism, while the Deputy Deputy Mayor of Skopelos, Athena Dakis, says "the air arrives at satisfactory levels. The presence of foreign visitors in Skopelos is noticeable and undoubtedly the airport of Skiathos serves all three islands. " At that time, the total number of tourists, Greeks and foreigners who visit the island, is growing gradually, and according to its estimate, this season will be satisfactory'

Why do we call it the rock? ...

A question often asked, and misunderstood ...

Years ago ...

The Royal Navy visited often between the wars, many of the sailors had a love affair with the island. Back in the 60's the nickname came from the first tourist settlers on the island. The British and South Africans who returned in the 1960's and bought up plots of land round Kalamaki, and started building villas.

Its a good way to start an argument - nip down to Kanapitsa and say it was the Brits who rediscovered the island, and the Saffers will challenge you, and vice versa ...

Many of them had visited previously whilst in the Royal Navy, and they and many others who later settled on the island referred to the island as 'The Rock' Just like their counterparts, and that is where the nickname comes from ...

History ...

According to mythology, the island complex of the Northern Sporades, in the Aegean sea, with the islands Skiathos, Skopelos (Ancient Peparithos), Alonnissos (Ancient Ikos) and Skyros, were created by the fight of the Titans Otus and Efialtes.

This is what world monk Alexandros, son of Priest Adamantios wrote in his works “Kokkona thalassa” or “To gramma tis petheras” on the creation of the Northern Sporades, the islands literally planted in the Aegean sea north of the Island of Evia and east of the coasts of Magnissia and Pilio.

The history of these islands is lost in the depths of the centuries. According to mythology, the Sporades were created by a fight that broke out between the Titans Otus and Efialtes. The fight turned into a rock fight. The rocks they threw to each other ended up in the sea, thus creating the Sporades.

Those two giant brothers, Otus and Efialtes, who had attempted, according to uncle Homer, to put Ossa on Olympus and Pilio on Ossa to make a stairway and climb to the heavens when they were still children, were working out down on the beach. They would take pebbles and skim them over the sea as a game.

From these pebbles of the two small giants, which after many skims settled in the sea, grew the Sporades islands to decorate the emerald sea. Skiathos, Peparithos, Alonnisos and many more.”

If you live 'on the rock' you will find many ex-pat people refer to it just as that. If you have explored the island you will know, the middle part is a huge exposed rock. (highest point is at 433 m (1,421 feet) on Mount Karafiltzanaka - Try saying that after a FIX or two) You will not see that from your sunbed on the beach or from the bus.

Whether you like it of not, a pebble is a small rock, if you leave it exposed on the waterline, it will go green with algae and moss. Thats how it finally becomes a 'small green island in the aegean' which if you holiday here, will be all you see or know ...

Holy Sunday - Icon Birthday ...

This morning is the celebration of the discovery of the 'miraculous icon' of Kounistra ...

Its also said to be the Islands birthday -  Χρόνια Πολλά Σκιάθος ...

Its a very important event here on Skiathos. The Icon will be paraded around the village after church service this morning.

Flags and bunting ...
The church will be very busy this morning, with the locals taking glasses of holy water back to their homes. You sprinkle the water on the floor, around the house, shop or business and let it dry naturally.

It will bring the house, and all those who enter, good luck.

On the harbour all the boats will salute the miraculous icon, with blasts from their horns, as the icon passes by as it returns to Tries Hieraches ...

This event usually takes a few tourists by surprise as the village folk, approach down Papadamatis street in a somber procession. One minute you are looking at postcards, or getting into a 'full english' and then the village pass by in their Sunday best.

Not quite sure what the lady on the icon thinks, of the often somewhat bare flesh, or tattoos on display as she passes by either ...

But after last nights storm, everything will be clean and fresh.

Coincidence? Maybe ...

It had been a while ...

... and it was so good to be back

Always a warm welcome from the team at Swell Bar, and it was like I had never been away ...

It was a very warm afternoon, and nothing had been left to chance. Friends had booked a table days in advance. I only confirmed myself, I was going a few hours before. You know how it is - Places to go, people to see, so little time.

Wandering the back way from town, and emerging onto the beach, walked in and immediately bumped into friends, who I had not seen for years. Also enjoying a lovely lunch of their own, Sheila and Ken (Fittest man on Skiathos) two of the 'original boomerangers' ...

Our table had the 'Mother of the Boomerang club' Mary - the lady who started it all off, years ago. Steve and Gina, and everyone was in good form.

You know when the waiter, knows how to look after his customers. Andreas putting a 'Mighty Alfa' in front of me 'Ice cold beer, in a glass frozen like a woman's heart' he said ...

Evaporating through the pores of the skin, as I surveyed the menu ...

Just what I needed, I had been 'sweating like Judith Chalmers at the airport, without her passport' after my walk up from town, wandering the back streets, in the heat of the day. That beer hit the spot perfectly as did another one later.

Our table had pasta with salmon, chicken arabic pitta, the farmers chicken, and the burger of all burgers, with a huge portion of chips to share.

You know when, after a lovely afternoon with friends, you feel like you just want it to go on and on. The ambiance of the Swell bar, Nick and the team all working hard to ensure a great time, is had by everyone.

Next time, I may just take Pinkygirl8's advice, and follow it up with a siesta in the garden ...

Travel delays

How do we cope, where did we go wrong ...

I have just realised, all my problems go back to that day I met Adnamsman. We met at the airport, he did his best in truly awful circumstances. But all my problems do indeed go back to there ...

Since then, I have traveled on boats, cars, trains, planes buses to various cities in Greece, and just about every route to and from the island, apart from swim.

Luckily, So far I have not lost my case, or had a direct problem with a wet runway, but there is always time for this to happen yet. I have been at the Athens gate for no plane to be there, and that's a challenge. So we got our cases back, used the metro, taxi, inter city bus and a ferry to get there the following day.

Only now after talking to people, on the internet. I realise I too suffer from 'Post traumatic travel stress disorder' ...

Stuff what others say, I will be claiming for everything on the resolver website. After all we need someone to blame don't we. Loss of earnings? Out of pocket expenses etc. I thought that was what travel insurance was for - maybe its me ...

Adnamsman, You will be hearing from them in due course ...
