Are we saying goodbye to the 757's ...

Things are changing ?

Photo © : @stephenporter70
TUI Airlines UK (Thomson) were using a 737-8KS on the LGW (G-FDZD) & LTN (G-TAWD) routes today instead of the trusty 757

Is this the start of their journey to the desert ...

Koukounaries beach concession - update

The municipality will receive 551.000 euros from the licence holders at Koukounaries for each year for the next 5 years

At the auction, held on Sunday 21st May - this year the prices soared through the roof as the concessions rose up to 105.000 euros! In addition the municipality decided to dismantle the newsstands ...

The sunbeds were being set out yesterday, good luck to the owners, lets hope they can make a decent profitfrom it ...

Other island beaches concession - No update on the date for their auctions as yet.

Thoughts ...

Are with people in Manchester - especially the children ...

The blog is read by hundreds of people each day from the UK. I sincerely hope none are affected by this tragedy, but it will be hard to imagine that there will be no Skiathos friends, who do not know someone ...

Manchester. United by Stuart Latarche

So I suppose you think you're clever with what you've gone and done?
To target those so innocent and young, who were simply having fun
You may have done some damage in the name of your "just" cause,
But we have a message to send; our bombs are louder than yours

But our bombs aren't filled with hate or metal shards and broken glass
Ours are filled with love and hope to mend those broken hearts
An explosion of emotion to show the world we care
To bring us all together, to show that we aren't scared

To help all those wounds to start to mend
To show our families this does not have to be an end
To not let some coward win and tear us all apart
To live our lives with those we lost still living in our hearts

So whilst elections may temporarily divide us
Events like this must do nothing but unite us
Let's not live in a world of which we're scared
Choose love, choose hope as hate cannot compare

No photos/talk or posts today - just think of the children ...

Update from the Olive grove ...

Work continues ...

Here are some photos of the site, and the path down to the Banana Beaches.

Our roving reporter writes ...

'I have been advised the new hotel have taken over Bananistas and from 2018 there will be foot access only. Not sure if this is true, as so many rumours are going around, like the 51 new properties are now 100.

A few cars/jeeps have managed to sneak down, I am waiting for the day they padlock the barrier while they are there, and can't get back up' ...

'There were around 35 people, on Banana,  a couple of jeeps at the bottom everyone else parked at the top or walked down' ...

Banana Beaches:

There is no longer any vehicle access to either of the banana beaches. This due to the builders of the villas enforcing the rule that it is private land, and at the moment a construction site.

There has been a wave of 'aggrieved outrage' to this, across the FB pages and on TA. However foot access to the beaches is being permitted.

Update from friends using the area

'We have been to Banana beach it was not too bad to walk past the construction, not as dangerous as people have made out, but it is sad that this beautiful spot has been destroyed. The tavernas on the beach are gone, Bananalista is still there, but not open. Yesterday (Sat) we could not get down to the beach as they were stopping everyone due too the metre deep trench they had dug down the slope for pipe work, we were told it was ok by the afternoon, let's see what today brings forth'

Anyone for ...

Freshly 'Home made' Hummus ...

A personal favourite, especially in place of butter when you have a cheese sandwich.

Want to try it yourself?  The recipe is here on My Greek Dish ...

Yes it tastes so much better than that stuff you buy in the shop. But you have to keep tasting it and adding lemon and salt to find what you like. It tastes very good indeed,  however once you have added the garlic, amd perhaps you like it a bit garlicy, Then am not sure you can detect what you like most after that.

Top tip go to Marrks and Spencer afterwards. If you sail through the queue to the front. You overdid the garlic ...

Always plenty of pulses on a Greek island, which come in handy if there is a ferry strike, Its been extended another 48 hours. Round the island via Kati Yorgi is a popular excursion. The three tavenas will be well stocked and awaiting your custom ...

Summer has loaded - Strike ...

All flights to Greece that should arrive between 11-15.00 today will be delayed or cancelled due to an air traffic controllers strike ...

Plenty of grumpy comments on the wires this morning. The UK charters to Skiathos are just delayed. Many flights to Greece are cancelled this morning ...

Καλό ταξίδι - To Kay & Trevor, currently watching the clock at Gatwick awaiting their delayed departure to Skiathos at 10am. Look out for them as they head off to Boots now to stock up with repellent, as its raining in paradise right now ...

So Its @Neil_A_A leading closely followed by Kay & Trevor then the flat cap brigade.

Happy Birthday - χρονια πολλα!! ...

Its that time of year ...

Today it is SWMBO's birthday, and we have been taking liberties by celebrating it all weekend. In fact it started on Friday, with friends. Then on Saturday we went out for a posh breakfast. Before she met up with her mates up in the big city.

A further surprise arrived via our local friendly florist on Saturday. When SWMBO was out 'painting the town red' ...

Well 'Red and White; probably, like the colour of the flag ...

Returning from a 'cat walk show; to find the flowers above, from a lovely couple, who have stayed in touch whilst she followed her journey ....

You know who you are, and we are all deeply touched by your thoughtfulness and caring x

Yesterday junior was holding court and directing 'pre-birthday' celebrations ...

We may have some more celebrating to do today, before we start another crazy week of trips to the hospital, This is of course dependent on the creators of a ransomware virus, that is affecting global computer systems and hospitals near and far.

Tradition says that we must wish SWMBO Sto Lat ! ...

If you wish you can sing along too - Click here ...

Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam.
Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam,
Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz,
Niech żyje, żyje nam,
Niech żyje nam!

This translates roughly into English as:

100 years, 100 years,
May he/she live, live for us.
100 years, 100 years,
May he/she live, live for us.
Once again, once again,
May he/she live, live for us,
May he/she live for us!

"Sto lat" (One Hundred Years) is a traditional Polish song that is sung to express good wishes, good health and long life to a person ...

So that seems right to me ...

The Proteus ferry ...

Its my favourite ferry boat ...

There is a reason for this, and I was reminded of it this morning ...

"So the Proteus was lifting the car ramp, to depart Volos this afternoon at 14:32pm.

A passenger raced along the quayside, having been released from the hospital - Just 14 minutes earlier, and having made a frantic dash across Volos, only to see the ferry departing.

The crew did not know this ...

However someone saw the dash across the quayside, from a car to catch the boat, and they lowered the ramp.

Reaching into their bag to pay the officer for the ticket, only to find that the purse, was still in a friends car, back on the port. What now for the ticket less passenger.

The rest as they say is history, but a big thank you to the Captain and crew of the Proteus" ...

Cheese saganaki ...

Not had these for some time ...

So I thought I would give it a go ...

To make them you need ...

Recipe from http://www.mygreekdish.com

Ingredients
  • 110-120g cheese (Graviera) (4 ounces)
  • Alternatively you can use kefalograviera, kasseri, kefalotyri or as a worst case  Pecorino Sardo
  • 50g flour, for dredging (1-2 ounces)
  • oil for frying (I used sunflower)
  • 1/2 lemon
I used kefalotyri - You can get it from Waitrose or Ocado online in the UK. Its already cut to size, you get two slices. So if you wish just make triangles out of each slice

Saganaki means pan, so if 'like in a curry you have a balti pan' its ideal. However I fried them in about 1.5cm of hot oil. I have been in the taverna kitchen when they are made, Its done in a wok and the oil is heated to a very hot temperature over a gas burner. I took the safer method hot oil rather than boiling ...

Instructions
  • To prepare this saganaki recipe, slice a large block of cheese (or some smaller if you prefer), approx. 10*7cm and 1,5 cm thick. If you cut the cheese thinner, the saganaki can melt into the pan.
  • Place the cheese under running water and then dredge into the flour, shaking of the excess flour. This will help the saganaki form a nice golden crust and to hold its shape when fried.
  • Into a small heavy-bottomed pan add some oil. As soon as the oil heats, add the cheese and fry for a few minutes on both sides, flipping the saganaki carefully with a spatula, until nicely colored.
  • Prepare this delicious Greek cheese saganaki recipe and serve, while still smoking hot as a delicious meze with a last minute squeeze of a lemon. Enjoy!
Tasting notes

Absolutely delicious! and a very big thumbs up from SWMBO. Junior not so sure as going through the I am not hungry/dont like that/wrong colour phase of childhood.
All it needed was a ribena type wine out of a box, and some more of that sunshine - with a blue and white paper tablecloth ...

Congrratulations to our friend from the USA who has read 458 pages of the blog overnight - Welcome and hope you enjoyed the read ...

Whats the weather like ...

Popular question ...

But if your apps any good you should know ...

Its pleasantly warm, and getting warmer. If you packed your cardigan then you are probably wondering what all the fuss is about. Still if you prepared for all the seasons in a day. Then that brolly and 'pac a mac' came in handy yesterday with the thunderstorm.

The earth rumble last night, was an added extra. It may have shaken your cocktail, and put a ripple in your Mythos Carlsberg but you do need to rehydrate ...

Its going to get even warmer this weekend ...

So is the sea ...

So if you picked up one of those bargains for May. Then pat yourself on the back - You did very well indeed.

If you are flying out today, then its probably too late. But still time for Fridays travelers to quickly pack the brolly just in case, because after heat, there is often a clap of thunder to clear the air ...

PS: Rain yesterday, Heat the weekend, don't forget the Deet for next week. The mossies - the much loved island residents, will be hungry ...

Skiathos Palace Cup 2017 ...

Koukounaries bay in Skiathos will host for the second time the Skiathos Palace Cup sailing race, during the weekend of May 19th-21st.

The race is organized by Piraeus Sailing Club and Nautical Club of Skiathos, under the auspices of Skiathos Municipality, with the support of the Cultural Association “Skiathos” and the Skiathos Palace hotel.

Skiathos is again embracing the organization and proves that apart from a top tourist destination, is also a unique place for sailing and yachting. This year’s expectations appear to be higher, elevating the experience for participants, defining Skiathos Palace Cup as an important yearly sailing event.

Match Racing is the format chosen for the Skiathos Palace Cup, which is the one used at America’s Cup race. Matches are short and intense, and the view is stunning. Teams participating at a Match Racing event enter a round robin process and compete against all other teams.

Another reason for being appealing is that Match races are conducted near the shoreline and the audience can watch the action closely.

For the 2017 organization, Skiathos Palace hotel facilities will be the perfect location to successfully host the event.

Aristea Derveni, CEO of “Plefsi” magazine, is the person who had the original vision of starting a yearly sailing event in Skiathos, and the one responsible for the successful results of the previous event.

“Plefsi” magazine is sponsoring the cup, which last year was awarded to the Kontogiannopoulou team. Who will be this year’s winner? The countdown has already started…

Summer is loading: Kalo Mina - Máios ...

Καλό μήνα σε όλους  - Good Month - Máios - May ...

Summer is almost here.

In Greece, children go out to collect flowers, to make into posies or wreaths. its the Festival of Flowers. Its a tradition which involves decorating houses, cars and even pets in flowers. A tradition that is said to be linked to the ancient Greek goddess, Demeter, who controlled harvest and the earth’s fertility.

In Greece, as in most of Europe it is also International Workers’ Day. This day celebrates the achievements of the working people and their trade unions. On Skiathos the communist party, will be hosting a party on the steps of the Bourtzi from 11am. This usually involves lots of loud music, and not a lot of people taking notice.

The Ferries are on a national strike, so it should be a quiet day - unless you are near the loudspeakers on the Bourtzi.

Its a day of solidarity brothers - That means stick together, head to the coffee shop. Perhaps have a Tsipouro, and celebrate the arrival of Summer
