25η Μαρτιου - Independence Day ...

Its Greek Independence day - Remember these words - Ελευθερία ή θάνατος - Freedom or Death ...

25 Μαρτίου 2014 ...
Here in Skiathos, Greek Independence day, like everywhere else in Greece will be celebrated with a parade, on its National day which is a holiday ...

'On March 25, 1821,  Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in Peloponnese, and the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire was officially born. The battle cry “Freedom or Death” was taken up by thousands, and war was waged for 9 years (1821-1829) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and declared an independent nation'

Glasses will be raised down on the port, perhaps a few hundred litres of coffee consumed, perhaps a meze or seven - Its that kind of day ...

Just a reminder for absent minded readers ...

Airport news ...

Fraport Greece has released its plans and mockup designs of the projects, developments and renovations for the upgrades to 14 of Greece’s major regional airports it will soon manage and operate.

Here is a mockup design of Skiathos airport

According to Fraport, upgrade works will contribute significantly to improving the overall customer travel experience at the Greek airports, while responding to the expected increase in tourism all over Greece.

By 2021, Fraport Greece will have invested in excess of 330 million euros for development works at the airports.

Once Fraport Greece takes over operations before the launch of the summer season, immediate actions at all airports will include general clean-up; improving lighting, marking of airside areas; upgrading sanitary facilities; enhancing services and offering new free WiFi, plus implementing works to improve fire safety in all the areas of the airports.

“The above projects are expected to improve the travel experience for passengers at the airports, until the major works are completed in 2021,” the company said in its announcement.

Fraport Greece’s major development works to be implemented during the first four years  include building five new passenger terminals — at the airports in Thessaloniki, Corfu, Kos, Kefalonia and Lesvos, plus modifications at Chania, Santorini, Action, Kavala, Samos, Rhodes, Skiathos and Zakynthos.

The significant improvements for increasing the total capacity of the airports and the quality of services also include increasing the number of check-in counters, security-check lanes, departure gates, and the number of aircraft parking stands.

Refurbishment projects at the 14 airports will be implemented for all runways, the existing terminals, sanitary facilities, 14 fire stations, airport apron areas, and 100 diesel generators. Baggage screening systems featuring the latest technology will also be installed at all of the airports.

An important element of Fraport Greece’s new project is to makeover the external and internal look of the airports.

“Indeed, the neat and, in some cases new, architectural designs will offer a new image at these 14 ‘gateways of Greek tourism’ – thus creating a pleasant travel experience to millions of passengers every year.”

Whats the weather like ...

Yesterday ...

Source: StavrosD1234 Published on YouTube 21 Mar 2017:

Fog transport observed in many regions of northwest Aegean today Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Cause of creation is to transfer warm air masses over the relatively colder water, resulting in condensation of water vapor near the surface of the sea. See video how the weather turned to Skiathos island through our camera at the highest point of the island.

World Poetry Day ...

I have been reminded by Yvonne, That today is World Poetry Day ...

Well this is my favourite poem

Sea Fever
By John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

I read it at my fathers funeral, and was once a 'Cutty Sark' tall ship racer  ...

Spring/Investment ? ...

Its the first day of spring, the days are now longer than the nights ...

Good news for those counting down the days until warmer weather, and summer holidays – the 2017 spring equinox took place at 10.28am GMT on March 20.

This is the time when the sun passes the celestial equator and days become longer – no more going to work in pitch darkness.

For some March 20 marks the first official day of spring – but meteorologists argue that it’s actually March 1.

Happy first day of Spring.. 🌺🌸

In the news ...

Large investment funds, mainly from Saudi Arabia, have shown interest in investing on the island of Skiathos, as a result of the impressive development in the tourism sector, especially over the last five years.

Many companies are visiting the island to seek areas where they can build hotels or villas for Greeks and foreigners.

“A new investment was carried out three months ago by TENA for the construction of 87 luxurious villas aiming at the upgrade of the island,” the mayor of Skiathos, Dimitris Prevezanos, said in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA). However, he cleared out that the area that is considered a forest area will remain at the municipality’s ownership.

“The municipality sees large but at the same time quality investments. The investment interest is always important as well as the respect to the environment, the inhabitants and the tradition,” he stressed.

Greece to introduce new residence permits ...

New residence permits to be issued for foreigners living in Greece

Adhesive labels in passports and all other kinds of paperwork relating to foreign nationals living in Greece are to be scrapped and replaced by a new, electronic residence permit that will also double up as an identity card.

There are currently 557,476 third-country nationals living in Greece legally and, according to a circular issued by the Migration Policy Ministry on Wednesday, they will soon be able to apply for a meeting with authorities to go through the necessary process for obtaining their permits.

Within 30 days of receiving the application, Greek authorities will have to set a date for the meeting, during which their biometric data (user’s photo and fingerprints) will be recorded so it can be entered on the card’s electronic chip. The chip can also store electronic proof of identity and a qualified electronic signature.

The card will also show whether the holder has the right to work in Greece.

All European member-states are obliged to introduce the electronic residence permit based on a regulation first passed in 2002 and then updated in 2008. The aim is to design a uniform residence permit for the EU. Several other countries, such as Germany which rolled out its residence cards in September 2011, have already completed the process.

According to the ministry’s circular, the cost of obtaining the residence permit will be 16 euros. Any foreigners living in Greece who already have residence permits will not have to update to the new format until their current documentation expires.

Extract from an article on Ivan Savvides - Entrapaneur and property investor

Rapidly, Ivan Savvides, which has already invested large sums in northern Greece, south stretching out business plans. Showing clearly that it is here to stay in the Greek business, the PAOK president has turned long in the real estate sector, which, admittedly, the economic crisis has significant opportunities. The Tsougria is covered by dense vegetation, especially pine trees, and emerald beaches attract tourists during the summer months. Its area is 1.14 square kilometers and guests to reach with tourist boats from the port of Skiathos or to the tenter of the yachts that fill the summer the area.

Ivan Savvides and colleagues, they asked and learned everything about the island, left the window open for the future, in order to resume discussions. However, the operator has given clear guidance for staff to identify other plots in Skiathos and inform him about the ways of utilization. On the island, according to local factors, sold currently land-fillets close to popular beaches, where they could create boutique hotels or large hotels, depending on the financial standing of the investor.

Heliport

Ivan Savvides decided to launch its investments in Skiathos from the construction heliport to come and go without problems with a private helicopter. Already have identified the place in an area close to the airport, and will soon begin work on the construction of the heliport, which will pave the way for accurately ... airstrip, the entrepreneur for more frequent visits to the Sporades. Besides, the visit to Skiathos in the summer of 2015, when, in the absence heliport, the private helicopter landed on a public road, had revealed then "P", publishing and related photographic documents. The landing caused many discussions to residents, who rushed to 'sing' to pilots and to settle that 'it can not happen again. " Since then much water flowed to the mill of the business of Mr. Savvides, who has decided to extend the Sporades, combining business and holidays. Fond of the island is, after all, and his son, who also has visited the beautiful beaches of the past.
