10% increase in bookings from Britain ...

Increased by approximately 10% are marked bookings from Britain, with tour operators in our region to speak of encouraging messages for the new season. Meanwhile, bookings continue with normality in all tourist areas, with professionals to foresee better progress this season, compared to last year.

The first elements are positive, but it remains to be verified in practice, and as reported by the  tour operator Alekos Efstathiou, who operates in Skiathos and Halkidiki , the increase in bookings of Britons are estimated at 10-11%, and for Scandinavians around 5-6%, without, however, still image for the other markets.
He explains that while 'bookings are higher than last year, but the total number of seats on flights from outside is not particularly high, because there are not too many extra flights yoy. The bookings come at a faster pace since the beginning of the year in what has been programmed on the original plan. "

Mr. Efstathiou attributes the above fact "in the country stability showing the moment and secondly that there prices rose too. VAT hike that absorbed more businesses than consumers, and therefore no major differences were noted in the prices. "
Similar is the picture that illustrates the  Vangelis Drossos, tour operator of Skopelos,  who said on his part that the positive picture is encouraging but "we have all the stress of having political stability in order to have a similar development in tourism." At the same time he stressed that "whatever Brexit, the workaday world will continue his life. Greece is purely a tourist destination and the fact that in recent years is a relative "hibernation", does not mean it will remain very. When things are stable, someone who wants to come to Greece, he does. " Concluding, Mr. Drossos does not fail to recall that "the increase of arrivals in Greece, does not mean that increasing and the turnover of the tourism product."

Good is the image that captures the part of the  tourist agent Thekla Kammenou , which has maintained a low profile, saying that it is early to draw firm conclusions. Analyzing the reasons for the above phenomenon, Ms. Kammenou states that "Spain and Portugal are already beginning to fill up and our traditional customers who love Greece, rushed to close quickly, because even existed before Brexit prices substantially." Similarly, the same tourist agent believes that hopefully without some shocking abruptness, it will be better this season than last year, if all goes through smoothly.

Led astray ...

By Greek friends from the rock ...

That's what happens, meet up for coffee they said, So we did, I even managed to find a coffee house that makes strong coffee. Only the Barista somehow managed to confuse, Cappuccino with Chai Latte.

Result three of us acting as if we had swallowed a fly on a motorbike, going down the hill at Achladies, (Yes that's how you spell it not Achaladies or Archaladies or even Archachadies)

Three refreshed cappuccinos later, and a seriously cheesed off coffee shop manager, was still growling in the corner, at a harassed looking lady Barista.

Friendships were renewed, presents exchanged, stories told and even helping out on a hotel booking that Booking.com had somehow screwed up - We went to the pub ...

Because of the archaic rules of pub infrastructure, we had to be vetted by a doorman, passed to another pub, that would allow junior in, then be ushered up to roof top level (Third floor) Here where probably no-one would look through the window.

We then had to walk down to the bar, for drinks and to the distant basement for the loo. But they are tourists and put up with this kind of thing. Even remarking the loos, were not as good as back on the rock.

'What is the matter with this country they said - Too many rules' - No I replied. 'they choose to obey them' and we all laughed ...

Its so much easier in Greece, you want something, you sit, they serve you, you have a drink, and then you pay. They do not quite get that its a bar, you wave your money in a bidding exercise, and if you are lucky, you get a tray to negotiate the stairs. - Oh and kids are welcome everywhere ...

It was good to get my friend, to close her eyes, hold out her hands. Open them to find them filled with freshly scrumped 'Flapjacks from M&S' Yes I know how to make a Greek woman happy - well her husband laughed too ...

One glass led to another, then another bottle, that's the way it goes, and it went very well indeed ...

Rain Rain Rain (2) ...

The apocalypse continues ...

Its been eleven days of it ...

The long grey cloud, did not lift enough for the Athens flight to journey up from Athens this morning,.

The hills of Skiathos have another dusting of snow.

Passengers are wondering whether to take the bus up the motorway, before the forecast snow closes it. Either that or camping back at the Holiday Inn ...

Rain Rain Rain ...

Its been ten days of it ...

Apparently there are another two days to go. Hopefully the long grey cloud, will lift enough tomorrow for the Athens flight to try to make it.

Passengers are holed up in the Holiday Inn at Athens after today's OLympicAir non arrival.

Apparently the radar unit on Skopelos is still down, due to the weather damage. Aircraft can only approach visually, If they cannot see the island runway due to the low cloud cover, then they cannot land.

Since the recent snow storms its becoming a regular occurrence. However SkopelosNews report that the army and engineers are now on the island, and making serious attempts to restore communication links. Read more click here ...

Its not very pleasant, for those roughing it out in damp homes.  But there is a chorus of 'would rather be there than here' on the forums, from the summer travelers, who for sure, do not know, what it is really like ...

Update posted by the Skiathos Dog Shelter

Well it’s been quite a tough couple of weeks!
Once the snow thawed there was a lot of cleaning/clearing up to do, we have now had a few days of rain since then but our little Shelter is slowly getting back to normal again!
The Shelter suffered some damage. The Vet room roof is now leaking in several places, nearly all of the bamboo screening around the perimeter fencing, which protects the dogs from the elements needs replacing and so does a lot of the guttering, Also sections of the water pipes and some of the taps suffered damage due to the freezing conditions.
We would like to say a very big thank you to Andrew Tomes for setting up The Snow Appeal for us, we really were truly overwhelmed by all your good wishes and generosity, a staggering amount of money has been donated. This will enable us to carry out a lot of these much needed repairs.
So on behalf of all the Dogs and all of us we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for thinking of The Shelter and all the continued support and goodwill that you give, we couldn’t do it without you. x

In addition the Skopelos radar is offline. It will try again later today, Fingers crossed, the pilot can see the runway, but the weather forecast is not good ...

Update: The Sky Express made it before the bad weather arrived ...

Island life in winter ...

Can be tough ...

You have read about it here, and on the SkopelosNews blog, and probably on the Alonissos one too.

Since SifnosMan returned to blighty, and then fled for winter sun in the canaries, its gone quiet, on that barren treeless rock in the Cyclades.

But when I read this yesterday, I did laugh as I recognise some of the problems. However its worth a read - especially No 24.

The heroic Captain of the Proteus ...

Report from the TACHYDROMOS newspaper
Original story Click here

More than two decades, from 1992 at sea, taming the roughened waves the captain of the "Proteus", George Anthony, from Glossa, which keeps under adverse weather conditions open the supply line of the Sporades.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of the same, the ship yesterday approached the night port of Alonissos, despite blowing strong intensity winds 9 Beaufort in order to be transported to the island Fire forces, soldiers and equipment to assist the problems recovery efforts caused by the onslaught of snowball.

Speaking in TACHYDROMOS , the always humble captain, said that every possible effort in order to serve the islands. In this context, amended yesterday's route, so that the passenger - ferry "Proteas" to successively reach Skiathos, Language and Alonissos.

The ground forces and machinery are transported to the "Proteus" in the islands to help local forces, despite the snowstorm and high winds that hinder the daily lives of residents of Skopelos and Alonissos.

Describing the image facing the past few days, Mr. Anthony notes that "Skopelos and Alonissos is much worse and the three islands, because they have accepted the hardest hit because of recent days blizzard."

The aim of the heroic captain is covered, even under adverse conditions, increased demand and the supply of the islands, and as he says "try for the best and we need to do more than what we can."

Asked if he has ever felt danger, the captain of the "Proteus" noted that "not reached the point to feel, because before we reach an impasse, stop and turn back and do something different, the permissible, everything within." Meanwhile, the supply of the islands firmly maintained in the same state that it is always on the side of the islanders for their best convenience.

In human terms, the captain points out that the first and main concern is to serve the world, the inhabitants of the islands, in the best possible way "because we are human and mistakes are human," as he points out. In closing, George Antoniou stresses that "the boat serves at any time and ask our mayors, respond immediately."

Many islanders suffering problems with water shortages, as boreholes freeze up along with unprotected pipes. Many pipes are run at surface level, so are unprotected.

As mentioned before, Skiathiti houses are rarely insulated. Concrete houses radiate cold like a fridge, Many of the older houses do not have a proper foundation, so your floor tiles are just a few inches away from the subsoil.

Not much point having underfloor heating in the modern ones, if the power is off, and the generator does not support it. Roofs without insulation, or in most places no guttering either, means huge icicles form. Its quite a sight to see an elderly Ya Ya, leaning out of the window, attacking them with a broom.

Trees are being damaged, as the snow breaks limbs, and shallow roots cannot support the weight of the tree.

Best thing to do is melt ice for the loo, drink tsipouro, or that bottle of whisky that someone gave you some time ago. Chuck another log from your shrinking woodpile, on the fire or into the woodburner.

Only another few months and it will be forty degrees again ...

Particular attention to movements.
  • Apparently the road to Koukounaries will be washed with sea water through the night to prevent ice forming,
  • Residents should leave a tap running on minimal flow, overnight to prevent pipes freezing
  • Attention everyone Where it is not necessary to move around the island. The best move is not to do it, there will be total frost conditions all day Sunday.

Its just another day, but its a fun way to change the numbers. This morning, we followed the Greek tradition, Kalo Podariko - The youngest, who is 'the purest' must be the first to enter the house, 'Right foot first' - As must everyone else who follows, thus 'Getting the year off on the right foot' on the first day of the year ...

The only thing missing, is the Vasilopita cake, and the traditional new year bread.  Who knows maybe next year.

SWMBO finished 2016 as she did in 2015. Rather unwell. and in bed. At least its a virus this year, whereas last year it was due to the Chemotherapy.

Well I tried to think of some thing different, and profound to say, besides 'Happy New Year' and all I can come up with is '2016 is so last year' just like the 'Skiathian Limoncello' ...

Yammas !!!
Ευτυχισμενο το νεο έτος! Happy New Year wherever you are, and thank you for visiting. Keep warm wherever you are ...

PS: How do you move the clocks forward, that one extra second ?
