Bye Bye Summer ...

It's the last day of August ...

Officially the last day of metreological summer, and today its the annual Tomato festival in Bunol, Spain - better known as 'La Tomatina' ...

Trucks deliver 160 tonnes of ripe tomatoes, which are then splattered all over the town by the 22,000-strong crowd, creating the worlds largest Passata, in just over an hour ...

However my 'Alicante tomatoes' are in the main like green cricket balls.

A well aimed return with one of these, might do some serious damage ...

There are a few exceptions, which is good - I need some ripe ones for the weekend ...

Chutney anyone ...

Irony for beginners ...

Is it me ...

As islanders and tourists alike stare at the empty shelves, in what now passes for the local branch of Carrefour/Marinopoulos.

I am reading many posts from UK based friends of the island, saying 'God bless Lidl' as its 'Greek week' bringing a piece of Skiathos to home etc.

The same people who also say ...

'We don't want to see a branch of Lidl, opening on Skiathos' something the people of Skiathos, would dearly need, and would love to see.

Off to scratch head ...

Changes ahead at the airport ...

A radical restructuring of regional airports will proceed ...

Fraport Greece, the German company will manage by the end of the year 14 regional airports for about 40 years.

Recently the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI) the EIB approved 300 million in funding. For the provision of 14 regional airports in the Fraport (the total financing for the whole project may reach 400 million.)

The company aims to cover, to the season of 2017, the largest shortfalls in direct infrastructure.

Just take the regional company: they repaired the sanitation, baggage and delivery procedures will be simplified, electronic bulletin boards and renewed signs will be repaired.

In a second phase planned construction work, such as the extension of the terminals of airports, new restaurants and shops.

According to the concession agreement, the Greek-German consortium Fraport Slentel has a comprehensive program of construction works to upgrade 14 regional airports,
It is estimated that by the end of the 40-year concession will increase the number of passenger movements at around 52 million.

Skiathos the current width of the runway is 75 meters from the central axis and therefore does not comply with the requirements of the ICAO standards.

Yet there is not enough space at the end of runway 20 to provide a sufficient safety zone End Corridors (RESAs), as the area limited by road routes and sea.

Will move the baggage system, will expand the baggage hall and office spaces in the existing plant will be relocated. Following these works planned expansion of 2,953 sq.m. terminal, providing sufficient capacity until the end of the concession period.

Preservation, of the ancient streets of Skiathos ...

Translation of article relating to the preservation of the classic streets of Skiathos ...

Well done to Theo Tzoumas and the Cultural association of Skiathos.

The traditional streets of the island, which were shown in the international press in the 70s when photographs of  Jackie Kennedy by Aristotle Onassis and other celebrities of the international jet set, walking them, began to built in the 19th century.

Today, at least 150 years after the first decision of the island's authorities for their construction, the Ministry of Environment Architecture Department determined that it cobbled streets unique in Greece in typical configuration "herringbone" with peculiar pedestrian sideways.

The islanders streets are recent examples of local traditional 19th century. and local folk art, retaining many of the old morphological data and is necessary to maintain for the study of the history of paved. Besides, they are reference points for the islanders.

A total of 34 decisions manufacturing cobbled streets dating from 1906 to 1930 were identified in the Municipality of Skiathos by the Cultural Association "Skiathos" in an attempt to substantiate the historical value of local cobbled streets.

The stories of Papadiamantis, eloquent witnesses of the past in his work "The Chalasochorides mentions the-facing of the mega cobbles;" meaning the current street George Moraitis hitherto called "big alley",

The president of the Cultural Association Theo Tzoumas explains. "Also in the project' noted ''; the cousin Machoula and I, together the slippery cobbles, the incipient from the great house of Captain - Nicholas of Matarona and reach the seaside market '', referring to the current Alexander Moraitidis street. The house of Captain Nikola Matarona located at the beginning of the Al route. Moraitidis next to the Church of Our Lady Limnia ". As if nothing has changed since 1851 when the Skiathitis writer wrote the "Chalasochorides" ...

When and how were constructed

The story of cobbled describes vividly the historian-archaeologist Syraino crown-Dionysius, which agreed on the suggestion of their being declared as listed. "In 1829 with the establishment of the Greek State, the islanders again settled in the port coming from the area of the castle. The new settlement of Skiathos started to be implemented from 1829-1830 and in 1855 the city rymotomisi begins on two hills, which are located on the seashore, "he explains. "The large natural harbor was a regulatory element of island life.

In densely built part of the settlement, the houses are usually small, built close to each other, two and stone, and the old narrow streets are paved. In the center of the road serving long thin stones in the shape of 'herringbone' 'and inclined to the axis of the street in order to facilitate the removal of rainwater. On either side of this provision -the 'herringbone' '- and by building lines, paving continues with more flat plates and markedly less inclined to the axis of the street in order to separate from the central arrangement of the stones, as a kind of pavements of the time. "

Declaring the cobbled streets as listed originally secured the favorable opinion of the Architecture Council of the Regional Unit of Magnesia and Sporades and then the decision is sent to the Architecture Department of the Environment and Energy Ministry. "After many months of our collaboration with the ministry some time ago posted Gazette which are characterized as preserved cobbled streets of Filokleous Georgiades, George Moraitis, Trinity and Alexander Moraitidis located in the settlement of the Municipality of Skiathos. The decision vindicated our initiative, "says Mr. Tzoumas.

According to the Official Gazette, in characterized as preserved streets prohibited any removal, alteration or destruction of individual components and decorative elements, their construction materials (stones and binder), while operations are permitted for the modernization of facilities for the drainage of rainwater for operational reasons - if not altered the architectural character and does not prejudice the listed elements and preserved elements of their surroundings. For any maintenance, repair, restoration or cleaning preserved cobbled streets and their related data will now require the assent of the Architecture Council.

WHAT islanders TRADITIONAL streets should be preserved

Filokleous Georgiadis: He was twice mayor and once president of the community. It was installed on the island in the first years after the liberation from the Turks. Allocated enough money from his property for public utility projects and beautification of the island while legacy blanketed the stream in the village center, today Papadiamantis street.

Koimisis tis Theotokou ...

The Dormition (or the Assumption) of the Virgin Mary (in Greek: Koimisis tis Theotokou) is a Great Feast of the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches which commemorates the "falling asleep" or death of the Theotokos (Mary, the mother of Jesus; literally translated as “God-bearer”).

In Greece, it is celebrated on August 15 as the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Every place of Greece has a story of the Virgin Mary (in Greek: Panayia), and every part of the country also holds a festival every August on the 15th to celebrate her.

Photos of the celebration at the Evangelistria monastery, shared with the kind permission of Victoria Sandels Photography ...

Crosswinds and Fly By's ...

We have a great airport ...

Sometimes it puts on a special performance, which gives the plane spotters, and assembled holiday nutters an experience to remember.

Today was one of those days, to have a camera to hand, and to be in the right place at the right time ...

Here is a video shared by Ben Luck, one of the active spotters in the Skiathos airport FB Group. It is of Thomson TOM5584 from London Luton Airport seen here making its first attempt at landing at Skiathos this afternoon ...

That was the first attempt, at dealing with the strong 40 Knots crosswind, and severe windshear conditions, They had another go too, and the same result.

It was a Boeing 757-200 (G-OOBF) a regular visitor to the island, but the conditions on arrival were too much for the pilots, and the requirements of having a stable approach for landing.

So after a tour of the Marine Park, and a view of 'The church' that they will not have to pay Thomson/TUI for ...

They were forced to divert to Athens, so three excursions in one trip. Mamma Mia, Marine Park and Athens all in one trip. Not going to be a good week for comission for the reps ...

Crazy August ...

Its here the peak of the summer season ...

The forums and groups are alive with heat, not all of it coming from the sun up above. The stress levels among the holiday makers, as high as that of the staff working hard, in the heat to make their experience an enjoyable one.

These are the weeks when the waiters have no time for a friendly chat, get in, get seated, give me your order, eat, pay me, and move on ...

Top prices are demanded for all services, the price of a room, will make your eyes water. The cash register is ringing, money is being counted. There will not be a car, quad, motorcycle, scooter, push bike available, all the fleets will be out on the road.

Even the Mossies and wasps will be circling looking for the discerning client. If this is not your idea of a holiday experience, then August is not going to be for you ...

As one island friend said yesterday - 'Its Hot' - No I replied, 'Its August' ...

Info for Greek bank account holders ...

Info for Greek bank account holders:

Capital controls are to be relaxed a bit further as of Monday. It will then be possible to withdraw 840 euros in one go every 2 weeks and the amount that can be withdrawn from transfers from abroad is to be increased from 10% to 30%.

Thanks to 'Steve in Skiathos' and 'Skiathos Island News' for the update ...

Later update:

So, the "leftist" SYRIZA government is now proudly proclaiming, that it is loosening the capital controls that have been in place for over a year.

Instead of being limited to withdrawals of 420 euros per week per bank account, limits will be "loosened" to 840 euros per 15 day period, per bank account.

7 days x 2 = 14 days
420 x 2 = 840 euros

Of course the "oh so clever" and "non gullible" Greeks are sucking it up, while the global "left" still thinks Tsipras "tried the best he could." ...
