Pasca approaches ...

In four weeks time tourism will have returned to the island ...

The cruise liner Aegean Odyssey arrives on 21st April. The dutch arrive from Amsterdam on the 25th April. The Brits arrive on the 2nd May from London Gatwick and Manchester ...

Before all of that we have Pasca - Greek Easter, the highlight of the year, for anyone who really loves Skiathos, its culture, people and traditions ...

The countdown is on ...

Another week to go, and then its the start of the 'Great week'. You may wonder what all the fuss is about, its just Easter. Well to Greeks and the Orthodox people, its a time of cleansing mind, body and spirit.

The new beginnings are celebrated, like a birth. Here on Skiathos where each day there will be a celebration. The excitement builds though the week, as it leads up to Great Friday, and the all night mass, and Epitaphos celebration. This event culminating in a candlelit walk around town. The people of the village churches meeting as one, at Tries Hieraches at 4am.

Whats it all about - watch this and see - Video: Πάσχα στη Σκιάθο ...

Here on Skiathos they follow the old traditions, you will see, 'A thousand candles burning bright, along the harbour and into the night' ...

This year the Boomerang club will be well represented. Friends flying in from Scandanavia and the UK to celebrate Pasca. This year I will not be walking the Skiathos streets, with my Greek friends alone like I have many times before ...

Then on Saturday night we go to church again, this time with a white candle. After the mass Pappa Yorgos will emerge from the church to celebrate 'Christos Anesti' with the village ...

Then there will be fireworks, gunshots, thunderflashes exploding. All this whilst the church bells are rung like crazy by a man in the bell tower, who showers us with bay leaves. Many will head straight for the tavernas, as the Orthodox fasting comes to an end, for Margaritsa soup, and roasted lamb or goat.

Then we return home to mark the houses with a cross, to give all those that pass through the door - Good luck for the year ...

Easter Sunday will be a time of music, laughter and celebrating with friends. The village will be perfumed with the smell of roasting lambs and goats, being barbecued slowly all morning, over an open charcoal fire ...

Where better a place to be, than here, 'on a small rock in the aegean' ...
