Event: Photo Exhibition 'A journey A Legacy A Sisterhood' ...

I visited the photo exhibition, last night at the Bourtzi ...

Many Skiathitis turned out to attend the event, it was standing room only in the Bourtzi. The event was a video link between the two twinned towns, hosted on the Skype platform.

It started with a prayer from both communities, religious representatives, before the speeches ....

The priest from Newport addresses the meetings ...
Pappa Yorgos addresses the meetings ...
Then one of the Pappas spoke in English, about the links of the two towns, cultural heritage, family and religious as well as being Greek ...

Teo Tzoumas gave a speech, as well as anecdotes, and was warmly applauded by the Skiathities in the Bourtzi hall ...

Mayor Nikolaos Plomaritis also spoke to the meetings, as did the Mayor of Newport from the USA ...

The Newport team listen intently to the Skiathos broadcast, addressed by one of our Island dignataries, and an International Movie star ...

Politician-Mayor-Priest ... Just like Greek TV ...
Some of the photos, on display in the Bourtzi ...

Teo reflected in the Bourtzi windows, as he gave further insights ...

We learned that the Skiathitis who emegrated to Newport, were active in boat building, Lobster fishing, and stuck closely to their Greek heritage helping out friends in times of need. The family links remain to this day, as we were to witness later.

One of the Newport political representatives, a senator addressed the meeting in Greek, complete with gestures and body language. Then addressed his audience in the USA with American'isms of gestures and body language - very interesting to watch the change of style ...

The Newport-Skiathos Club Hellenic dancers, performing the Kamara, a traditional dance of Skiathos. This was warmly received by the Bourtzi guests ...

Then it was the turn of the Bourtzi to offer up some culture across the ocean. Themis playing the piano, excelently. However across the seas the Newport thought it was all over, got up and left ...

Themis played on, as we all watched aghast, then the laptop webcam was put to good use. Friends across the sea looking to see if they could recognise family, and friends in the Bourtzi audience ...

Themis played on, and finished his ensemble, as people in the audience waved to friends, and family in Newport. It was a strange way to end the link, even Pappa Yorgos was laughing as he left. Still now I know how the goldfish feels in the water bowl - as do you ...

It was a great initiative, just a shame, at times we could not hear what was going on over in Newport, I think their 'lapel mike' was not up to the job. Especially if you wear it on the left lapel, and talk to the laptop camera on the right.

We did see one of the ladies in the USA, raffle a plate of Bakalava. It started at $75 and I think was sold for $150. Many of the ladies in the Bourtzi audience, were doing swift calculations from $/€, and were really impressed.

Getting married on Skiathos this year, may become a little more expensive ...
