Bonfire Friday ...

Its a bit smoky here this morning ...

One or two bonfires drifting smoke across the town. We have returned to a cloudy chill feel this morning. A grey day all around. Very still airs, but the fishermen are all tucked up behind the harbour wall. They must know something ...

Later update: Spent the mid morning at the school, where the children were enjoying their fancy dress party. Music, dancing and lots of sweet things to eat. This allows the school to close early so that the teachers can get away to enjoy the long weekend.

It was quite a lot of fun, probably not so much fun, for the school cleaner. Who has quite a mess to clear up after the party had finished ...

Its remained grey all the rest of the day. Raindrops are falling from what remains a breeze-less, and still smoky grey sky ...

Thats not a Mousaka ...

It seems Gordon Ramsay wants to offer assistance, to British-owned restaurants in Greece. I thought retaining his Michelin stars would be a better idea - Still who are we to argue ...

So if you are interested in taking part in Gordons 'Greek Kitchen Nightmare' or know someone who will, then click here for further details.

Nominations anyone? ...

Aegean Flying Dolphins - Erato ...

Aegean Flying Dolphins will be operating flying dolphin Erato, on the route from Volos to Skiathos Skopelos and Alonissos, starting on April 1st ( Hope its not a joke ) and throughout the summer months. They will be in direct competition with Hellenic seaways Flying Cat 6.

It will be good to hear the sound of the Flying Dolphin back on our part of the aegean. Lets hope they fare better than the last private operator of flying dolphins - Their flying dolphin disappeared in a cloud of black smoke leaving Skiathos harbour, and they were never seen, or heard of again ...

Hellenic seaways Flying Dolphin XV, that used to operate the route was still alive last month. Its now called the Santa and operates under the Albanian flag . We can only assume Flying Dolphin XXIII is laid up somewhere or was broken up for spares ...

Wake up the neighbours ...

With the sound of the chainsaw in action ...

Still ploughing our way through the wood stockpile. Some of it really quite large, so needed some work to make it more manageable. First the chainsaw needed a 'birthday' some fresh fuel and oil, and its teeth sharpened. So one trip across town, on a 'chilly morning' later, once this was done we were ready to go.

An hour this morning, creating sawdust, and we have another nice pile of firewood. In addition we met just about everyone from the street, and the nearby alleys. They found an excuse to come out of darkened rooms to see what was going on.

Have you got a 'Jaki' (Open fire) if you answer yes, they will say you are cutting it too short.
Have you got a 'Soba' (Woodburner) answer yes, you get an appreciative nod. Answer No, they will say you are cutting it too long.

Say yes to both, and the look of confusion is something to see ...

From the remnants of the last two deliveries, which I have now sawn up. Then along with some larger pieces that are left over, I should still have around another months supply of firewood.

One bag of sawdust, and with another neighbour, overseeing me stacking the wood correctly indoors - It was done - I had a bit of sweat on too ...

Flu outbreak in Greece ...

The website 'Keep Talking Greece' has again raised the issue, of the current flu outbreak in Greece. You can read all about it here ...

Childrens party ...

Those children party hard ...

Sunday afternoon, in a club down on the strip. The scouts/guides of Skiathos put on a show, watched by a couple of hundred adults, and children in fancy dress. Led by Yanula the clown, we had slapstick fun, dance exhibitions, fancy dress, shadow art, Magic, and all kinds of fun ...

An excellent few hours, and collosal effort by Yanula, and her team to stage the event.

Once the show had finished, the little people took to the dance floor, and danced. Many taking their inspiration from the dance leader, who put on a very impressive routine up on the stage ...

The Childrens Party, finally at an end, it was time for their helpers to relax, let their hair down, and practice their own dance moves, as the music goes on ...

Later update:

Meanwhile this morning there is a chill wind blowing down the harbour. Grey waves slapping against the harbour wall. We had rain again overnight, though not enough to worry about, neither enough to fill the islands water reserves.

Not for the first time either, mention of potential problems with the water supply this summer. The dry period meaning the water table has not been topped up. We need a few weeks of steady rain (traditional winter weather), so the land can absorb the water, and not run off into the sea ...

The bus terminus park ...

Flowers into life ...

These photos taken yesterday afternoon. Nothing like that this morning, as we had a thunderstorm pass the island, and its been rather damp ...

If anyone see's a 'chimney sweep' at the scouts party, that will be me. The Fancy dress was not intentional ...

Catch of the day ...

So fresh they are almost twitching ...

Grey Mullet: Kéfalos (κέφαλος)
When you see Grey Mullet: - Kéfalos (κέφαλος) with clear eyes, pink gills, firm body, and it smells of the sea. Well its hard not to grab one, and think about getting your barbecue or grill ready. The added bonus here is that, not only were they scented with ozone, they still had the rigamortis too - that's very fresh, landed within the last few hours ...

Grey Mullet: Kéfalos (κέφαλος)
Some lovely fish on offer this morning, Barbounia, Melanouri, Fagri, to name but a few. But these two cost me just €7 so that's a bargain in any language ...

Later: Meal of the day ...

Grilled Kéfalos that had been stuffed with lemon and the chopped fennel stalks. Grilled courgettes and fennel. Fillets removed then drizzled, on the plate with Latholemono, which I call 'Skiathos sauce' made from local sourced products - Olive oil, lemon juice and oregano. Potato salad and a fresh local lettuce ...

Καλές αποκριες - Party Party Party ...

That was good fun ...

This mornings school run shows evidence of more fun across town last night. Discarded streamers broken egg shells, parts of thunderflashes. It was quite good to see the young, and not so young, enjoying the festivities. Children in fancy dress running around the streets. Adults too in the early hours ...

Popped in for a glass of wine at SUGA, each glass was around 300ml served in a tumbler - that was getting the party going, music, and a meat meze which was really tasty.

So after a couple of 'glasses' of wine, I was soon being led astray. However as the light was fading, I reminded one member of the party, that they were there, when the ferry came into port earlier that morning. This being the ferry's second call, and the return trip of the day. Whereas it seemed that one person, had actually been there all day enjoying the fun ...

Getting a little hungry again after our wine meze, we headed off to a grill house in town. Here the serious business of roasting meat was taking place in earnest. Every table booked long ago, and for very good reason ...

If it looks good in the photos, then there is very good reason, as it tasted very good too ...

Very tempted later, to pop in for a snack, at the new Kafenion in Tries Hieraches square

So this morning, after a wander round town, and bumping into a few 'bleary eyed' locals. it was good to wander along the port, and see how the artist had finished his work.

The childrens playground mural - The aquarium ...

A great job, and an excellent addition to the childrens play area ...

Tsiknopempti - Charred Thursday ...

Brisk walk this morning down club strip - Twice ...

Building up an appetite for some meat today - Tsiknopempti - Charred Thursday. Tradition has it the air should be scented with the waft of barbequed meat today.

Much cooler than of late, in fact the clouds were hanging very low, on the hills earlier. The bakery in Papadamatis street nice and warm, both bakers were in the front loading the shelves, with warm bread.

The bakers both have the white complexions, and tired eyes of men who work through the night. Either that or years of working with flour, and its permeating through the pores of their skin ...

After the school run, I went for a walk down club strip. Some of the clubs looking weather worn, and flowers, and weeds are popping through storm damaged decking. Plenty of fat cats, roaming around down there too.

The water is grey and silvery and looks cold, like the air above it. The sun is breaking through and burning off the misty skies, and sea fret.

Vasilis the taxi driver gives a wave as he passes, his brother Kostas too. Kalypso is bobbing up and down gently on its moorings, next to it, a fishing boat. The owner repairing the nets ...

Lots of posters for parties, starting today. It is Tsiknopmpti, so lets start with a barbeque, ending with an after the barbeque party. Well - I did say its the party season ...

Scouts party

Not forgetting the children, of course. After all their first party, of the season is on Sunday afternoon ...

Looks like it is turning into a barbecue type of a day too ...

I was walking along when I bumped into my friend, Stamatis. We discuss the way of the world, he knows a few things, we share a few experiences.

He wanted to tell you this ...
'Come to see us on Skiathos, and enjoy life - Why wait for summer' ...

However over coffee with Stamatis and Dimitris the fisherman. It started to seem like summer was about to catch up with us too ...

One thing led to another - Oops is that the time, I can hear music, sorry must party ...
