Skiathos Airport expansion update (5) ...

Here are the latest photos from the Skiathian's Paparazzi activities this morning ...

My activities did not go unnoticed, so was able to chat to some of the people affected, and involved. I as an island resident, have an interest. So hope the photos will give a better understanding to those near and far - Of what is going on as works proceed.

The view of the work from the airport fence, seen from below the control tower ...

North East of the airport, near Xanemos, an example of the waste soil from the airport being put to good use, and landscaped. This area at least one metre higher than previous. Huge amounts of soil from the airport have been put to use, all over the island.

Earth being landscaped ...

Then  at Xanemos, the view of the end of the runway. This will extend another 110 metres towards the beach. Clearly a lot of earth will be used to raise the level of the runway. I estimate the end of the hill is around 100 metres distant, from the perimeter fence.

The top of the current Runway 20 ...

Trucks are removing earth, from the west side of the airport. This is taken via the service road, down to the south of the runway, then up the east of the runway to Xanemos. There are trucks passing every five minutes or so, making the circuit. The work is operating seven days a week.

Truck passing Xanemos taverna ...

A view from above Xanemos, towards the land clearance at the end of the runway ...

North of Runway 20 ...

Not a good photo - sunlight against me. This is the hill of earth to the North West of the airport. As far as I can understand this is being stored for future use ...

Earth mound and tipper truck ...

Empty truck returning ...

View from Xanemos towards runway 20 ...

View from Xanemos beach taverna ...
View from the west side of the airport fence towards runway 20. Just behind there has been some large clearance, so assume there will be a large turning/holding point located here ...

Further along is the large clearance, seen as distant in the first photo. So two separate areas of engineering work to the west side of the airport. Not all the land to the west of the airport.

Earth works on the west side of the runway near the terminal building. Here there will be additional aircraft stands, to accommodate up to 10 aircraft ...

View towards Xanemos, as another truck completes the circuit, and arrives to be filled again ...

The expanse looking towards the North West ...

The expanse looking south, the terminal area off shot to the left ...

Aircraft will park here ...

Eating away at the hill ...

Tiffany's cafe is right adjacent to the construction works, the exit from the construction area passes the door and has been cleared to the rear. Sadly it is isolated almost like a traffic island at present ...

Looking North adjacent to the terminal building ...

The civil engineering project is huge, and to see it first hand it makes it easier to visualise.

Work locations ...

I was surprised to see that not all the buildings had been cleared, to the west of the airport, as has been mentioned elsewhere. Some are remaining, and are currently being lived in. They clearly are not part of the plan, or surely would have gone.

Further updates to follow in due course ....

  1. Absolutely amazing shots, thank you so much. When are they expecting to start using the new space? Will it be ready for the start of the season? You are so lucky to be able to watch it developing. Goodness only knows what it must be costing if they are working seven days a week. Obviously expecting to get their money back by extra tourism. I just hope that our beautiful Skiathos doesn't get over-run like many other islands.

    1. Suggest some availability in 2015, runway later, a lot of work still to be done levelling land etc. Huge project and investment that will benefit all the islands, not just Skiathos but Skopelos and Alonissos too. However some people are badly affected by the work, notably the Xanemos beach taverna and airport taverna ...

  2. Fur coat and no knickers then, as the saying goes. Sorry to hear about the two tavernas - we've been to both numerous times. Someone always has to suffer unfortunately. :(

  3. How's the work progressing? Will it be complete by the time the new season opens in May?

    1. Hello David

The works are proceeding to schedule after our mild, and relatively dry winter. There is a huge amount of work still to be done, and lots of concrete to be laid. Its not due for completion before summer 2015. You will notice a big difference when you arrive ...

  6. Have been going to Skiathos for last 15 yrs and again in 3 weeks time. The local people may need the extra revenue but it will spoil this beautiful island especially at peak season. Will just have to keep visiting early and late, hopefully then not too over crowded
