Winter maintenance ...

Started today in earnest ...

The house has been feeling unloved, it seems I have a few weeks work to do. Today after a long summer the shutters started to have a birthday.

First all the windows were cleaned, then the shutters, were washed down. This takes quite some time, as dust accumulates in all the louvres. This gets quite sticky from the sap from the bougainvillea and the oil from the wood.

Whilst you do this the locals come out to see what you are doing, and point out other issues in the street that need addressing. The numerous street cats eye you up with suspicion, and make a beeline for the door if you leave it unguarded.

Whilst this was all going on the interior windows needed a clean, and the curtains had to come down. Hoover out and trailing cables, whilst manoeuvring with buckets of water, and then inspecting the woodwork for signs of insect eggs.

Our friendly street cleaner stopped for a chat, asked when the bougainvillea was going to be trimmed. Pointed out concrete splashes on the wall from my neighbours restoration - The list of jobs grows ever longer or so it seems ...

Tomorrow the same maintenance routine for the upper windows, after the school run. Then the start of the teak oiling of the shutters. It feeds the wood after the ravages of the summer heat. It also waterproofs them from the rains and cold of winter.

If the rains come then I have more jobs to do inside, at least not washing the floor - The washing machine leaked earlier and started that process for us too.

Whoever said autumn and winter was for a rest, must have a happy life ...

Tonight we had a Chicken and Mushroom risotto. I was banished to the kitchen, with my chefs hat on, and its gone down very well indeed with SWMBO and Junior.

Tomorrow SWMBO is off on a paper chase to Volos. The fares are quite good at the moment as the winter fares war on the ferries continues.

Flying Cat 5 was €75 return, now special offer of €60
ANES Proteus €35 return ...

No prizes for guessing which option. Almost a BOGOF as SWMBO will be back there again next month, so settle down with a good book, and shopping list to hand if time permits ...

Off to consult my days action plan 'left for me' on the door of the fridge ...
