Down time...

After work chill out time ...

The superyacht Gloria Teresa was lit up like a Christmas tree, this evening. Its guests arriving by private jet. Then whisked along the paralia in two black mercedes.

Usual rumours swept the harbour, its the Beckhams, Tom Cruise etc. Who cares ? But whoever the lady was with the children, the kids were clearly enjoying running around the top deck, and having fun. After all that's what family holidays are all about.

Hope they have a great time whoever they are ...

Not only were they sheltered away from the fierce wind, within the confines of the boat, but so was I later -  for an enjoyable hour at Taverna Alexandros. In fact it's absolutely buzzing here this evening. Great music and holidaymakers dancing under the Mulberry tree.

Alex the "most famous waiter" in Skiathos, sends his best wishes to his friends, across the world. Now for yoghurt with cherries and a glass of red ...

Island news ...

It has now been confirmed by News Skiathos that a British tourist in 'medical distress' stole the Skiathos ambulance on Wednesday. In the process causing damage to a number of nearby parked vehicles.

The man has been taken to Volos hospital for further assessment and treatment.

--------------------------------- // ---------------------------------

There have been a spate of vehicle accidents involving quad bikes, and motorbikes here on the island. These are keeping the medical centre here, and the hospital in Volos busy.

--------------------------------- // ---------------------------------

The weather is expected to break tonight, with a band of thunderstorms passing through the region. Sunday and Monday are expected to be rather windy again.

--------------------------------- // ---------------------------------

Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn left the island on Wednesday, after their annual holiday here on the island. Good to see them enjoying their time here again, and as relaxed as ever amongst island friends.

English Friday ...

... at the airport

Yes this excellent photo by Benjamin Schutz, from Airliners.net just about sums it up nicely ...

The first flights this morning were battling into a fierce headwind, their air brakes, and flaps screaming as they passed by over the harbour.

The wind has now dropped, and it's a lovely warm afternoon ...

Hello to ...

Janet and John from Sevenoaks ...

Friends of the blog who I was lucky to meet this morning, on a very draughty harbour. Pleased to say I was a fan of your books at a tender age :)

Hope you keep enjoying the blog ...

Anemos (Take 2) and a request for an Amazon airlift ...

Another very windy morning here on the island ...

Whatever is going on with the weather, its another very breezy start to the day. Looks like another day to start another project with a paintbrush ...

Any Skiathian friends heading down here in the next week or so?

If so then perhaps if you have room, in your bag - would you be able to bring a pair of sandals from Amazon? SWMBO insists that I consign the trusty timberlands to 'shoe heaven' after many KM's faithfull use here on the rock. Where they have been tested to destruction, just like my trusty cap.

If you can assist please get in touch via the comments facility, twitter feed, FB or the good old Skiathos Bulletin board - back online in all its glory ...

Mr Steve ...

Its been my pleasure these last few weeks to share some time with Steve ...

A gentleman and new friend, Originating from Canada - he is a traveller. A former tour guide, he is still travelling the world, and tells me he is 86 years young.

We have shared coffee, on a number of occasions, this last month or so. A laugh, a joke and a few life experiences.

His Mother back on the prairies of Canada, at the time of the great depression, said 'she did not know what to do with him, as he had fancy ideas of travelling the world'. Someone said, to her 'if you did not want him to have big ideas, then you should never have brought him a radio' ...

Just goes to show how something we now take for granted, can change your life forever. I will miss Steve when he departs tomorrow, with his partner over the harbour via London to pastures new.

Kalo Taxedi to a gentleman and friend, who I am lucky to say, crossed my path here 'on a green island in the aegean' ...

Hello to ...

Jack & Michelle who know me from another place.

Lovely to meet you this afternoon ...

Its arrived ...

My last ever free super saver delivery from Amazon.co.uk

Probably the last business they get from me too. However it also affects the charities here on the island, that use Amazon for much needed supplies, to support their activities ...

There is an e-petition on the subject, you can sign it here if you wish to support their cause ...

Friends ...

Feeling like we are in an episode of Friends this evening ...

There we were minding our business, but we looked up. Only to be then watching 'ugly naked guy' hanging out his washing, over the street - many floors above.

This left my colleague speechless ...

It all happens here on a green island in the aegean ...

Anemos & a Superyacht ...

The wind she blow ...

The old boys down the harbour this morning shouted to me this morning - Painting day.

In other words find something else to do. At 5:30am it was calm, at 6:00 you heard a breeze. At 7:00 when I went to the bakers its was blowing hard, and now shutters are banging. Plant pots are being  blown over in the street.

Wonder what I will do ...

Later update:

Here is what I did next - well somewhat later anyway ...

Cross town diplomacy ...

Up early for my latest session off cross town diplomacy ...

SWMBO is unwell, so after the school run it was off across town on a very warm morning. Carrying a water bottle as its very humid. Dehydration a problem now as we head head into the summer heat. Let alone that reflecting off the cobblestone streets.

It's still amazing me even to this day how much bureaucracy, is involved in getting a five digit number. Six trips to one office, three to another, and four more to yorgos for photocopying.

I have here a five digit number ...
Much to my surprise, I was successful in my objective. (It has taken over a week) Returning clutching a piece of paper, and "declaring peace in our time" in my war against bureaucracy ~ well at least for this week ...

Nice to see summer fruits swelling and ripening. Cherries, greengauges, grapes, quince  and figs. Still some lemons available too if you know where to look ...

Beautiful flowers everywhere now, pink and white oleander in full bloom. Geraniums and Petunias tumbling from baskets and window boxes.

Town is strangely quiet after the weekend invasion, and exodus yesterday. The port busy with arriving ferries, and the Apostolis fuel tanker making a delivery between ferry movements ...

I am a mainland Greek get me out of here ...
Next objective, the next school run and perhaps, a well earned glass of chilled FIX beer ...

Art deco lines ...

One of the boats sent some guests into town, this evening to do some shopping. Must say the speedboat they sent them in was something art deco, and had great lines. A beautiful boat for beautiful people.

Very impressed ...

Something different ...

But I like it ...

Set in a wall, and sadly stained with asvesti, but a thoughtful addition to someone's town-house ...

There must be a story behind it, a captains house perhaps. Otherwise, its a strange place to hide part of the family dinner service.

On the subject of boats, this boat has taken my eye. Its lovely and has been moored here for a few days. It's clearly much loved by its lucky owner ...

Its the Pentecost holiday weekend, last night Greeks descended on the island from the mainland. The ferries resembling landing craft, as the doors opened and the passengers stormed down the ramps.

At the airport quite a few aircraft were late arriving from the UK. One aircraft landing here after midnight. Olympic Air have even been using a jet on the Athens - Island Hopper - evening service a few times this week.

Must be summer - ah yes thats why it is so hot here on the rock ...

1pm update:

The invasion continues. Express Skiathos, Proteus, Flying Cat 5 and Express Pegasus have disgorged hundreds of weekend visitors from the mainland. The port completely blocked by cars, trucks and motorcycles darting in between ...

Summer has arrived on Skiathos ...

Another interesting arrival, the Adina, clearing customs here on Skiathos.

Now its not every day that a boat sails in under the red ensign, fitted with a B&Q garden umbrella. However that is what happened today.

Likewise clearing customs here is a little strange too, the crew will be spending the weekend here - waiting for someone to unlock the drawer with the papers and stamps ...

More Island friends ...

The two horsemen of the Paralia ...

Its Giannis and Stathis, Giannis one of the nicest people that I have met here on Skiathos. A warm friendly character, loved by tourists and locals alike.

Stathis favourite past time is marshaling traffic, he get cars moved and generally tidies up the paralia through force of personality. A great friend who greets me whenever he see's me with a big hug. Usually after dropping his wife into town for some shopping. How may ladies can say they pop into town by horse and cart - His other great summer speciality is supplying wonderful tomatoes, to people like me.

If you are visiting this summer, Giannis white horse is rather partial to Polo mints. Stathis horse is a bit more feisty, just like his owner ...

Today's lunch ...

A gift from Theo, our friendly fisherman ...

... and as for the lobster, very nice it was too. Boiled and served as a salad with spicy sausage and sun dried tomatoes.

Skiathos Airport expansion update (1) ...

Here is a Google translation, on the latest plans for the expansion of the Skiathos airport ...

Source: http://www.ypodomes.com

As reported in the technical description of the project by the Ministry of Development, Infrastructure, Transport and Networks, provides, inter alia expansion of apron and runway extension towards the north by 110 meters. When completed, probably by the summer of 2014 - the project is expected to solve basic problems after previously planes bound for Skiathos lands on ... Thessaloniki due to failure of landing at Tessalia. VREGMENOS CORRIDOR The big problem is when the runway is wet, which means that aircraft need more meters until you stop completely. The extension of the runway to north by 110-m, of which 80 are substantially in-use would partly solve the problem, but not completely. When the length of the runway is insufficient due to slipperiness, pilots notified that they either land in Athens and Thessaloniki, or take the risk of landing. According to the representative of the Commission Skiathos club competition which claimed this project, Despina Symiakakis, 80% of pilots do not take the risk. As a result, passengers started for example from London bound for Skiathos landing in Thessaloniki and to come to the island by car or by boat after they have undergone a first class hassle. DUAL APOGEIOSEIS Another phenomenon observed in the National Airport " Papadiamantis' (who in 2011 had more than 200,000 arrivals and departures) is that due to the short length of the runway, the aircraft can not take off when they are full of fuel and passengers that weight. This is especially true for flights 180 passengers, he said the "E" Mrs Symiakakis, "representing about 65% of the total flight." So, the plane goes from Skiathos with marginal fuel (so you do not have a weight and ... 'prevent' take off), make a stop in Thessaloniki and Athens to refuel and take off again from there. According to Ms Symiakakis, dual take-offs and landings of aircraft burden by 40% the cost of the flight . Also, according to the recent new EU legislation on emissions, which exceed the limits set pays a fine. As understood, dual takeoffs and landings lead to higher emissions of pollutants and, therefore, to possible fines. PARKING addition, the task given to the "Quarries Tirnavou SA" will be expanding the apron. For Airport Skiathos, this practically means that parking increases by two to six. During the summer months, when the traffic is greater, the two positions are not sufficient. Sometimes planes strolling in the air waiting for a seat while other times necessarily stationed in the corridor, causing hazards. With the increase of parking spaces, airport Skiathos will be safer and will allow for a higher level of tourism, since most will be able to come to the island and smaller aircraft charter. Please note that due to the lack of parking spaces Aeroclub Skiathos not working summers while one of the two positions considered position necessary (fire or transport emergency health) so that they should in fact be permanently leave, something which he said the Mr. Symiakakis "never happens." Among other things, Mr. Symiakakis stressed the "E" that "because of all these reasons, Skiathos airport loses much in terms of competitiveness." The project has been awarded to the company and remains the signature of the contract, which should be done within one month. After signing will start projects and completion date of the project has been designated by the Ministry to 700 calendar days from contract signing . Ef. Freedom

Island friends ...

Here are a couple of island friends, who you may know ...

This is Kostas ...
Kostas ...
He is in my opinion an excellent Barrista, you can see his 'art in a coffee cup' at Slip Inn - or enjoy a cocktail crafted by his own hand ...

This is Dimitris ...

Dimitris ...
He is in the process of saying what the **** are you going to do to me now.

His specialist skill is making people cross the road, whilst trying to get you to visit a restaurant. He is very good at volunteering me to get involved in things, that do not interest me at all. He gets me in to all kinds of trouble - especially during the winter ...

However he is a very good friend. One of the funniest people that I have met on Skiathos - If you want a laugh, ask him how he lost his appendix ...

Now if you know anyone with an interest in 'die cast model toy cars' Please get in touch with me via the comment facility on the blog. We have something that may be of great interest to you ...

Beer !

Hello to ..

Robert and Margaret.
Fan's of the blog. Nice to meet you earlier today ...

Leigh and Steve
Look forward to seeing you back here soon ...

'Too much rain' ...

The rain came last night just after 9pm

It started with heavy raindrops that sent people running for cover, and me pulling electrical plugs as swiftly as I could. However the shower was shortlived, rather than short circuited.

Skiathos was surrounded by thunderstorms, however none made contact with the island. The sky was lit from the mainland, from the north towards Halkidiki, to the west in the direction of Skyros, and a great view to the south of forked lightning over Evia.

The forecast said that the worst would be with us in the early hours. A storm passed by at 4am, it was the 'ants on the roof' clearly wearing hobnail boots that woke me, not the distant thunder.

Rain showers have continued ever since, mainly shortlived and light. Its 8am, as I write, and the rain has started to be torrential. Just as I was about to leave on the school run.

For the uninitiated, this is what the Skiathos rain does to the street. No that is not the fire brigade washing the steps. That is the raging torrent, making its way down the street ...

It's a little too much for Junior's umbrella, and the house is resounding not only to the tremendous crack of thunder overhead, that shook the window panes. But to a chorus of junior saying, over and over again 'too much rain'

So school run postponed until after the tide has turned - which may be some time ...

Blue above - Breezy below ...

The view this morning is of blue sky ...

That is despite the dire warnings of Poseidon - which again suggests we will be wet later this afternoon. Windfinder who have revised up, and then down their predictions, in the last hour - so who knows what will happen.

Here is another site for thunderstorm radar, based in Kifissia its quite good.

Last night we had a rain shower around 9pm, and a lightning show over the mainland as the storms tracked by. After that the body shut down again. Feeling a little better after 40 hours in bed shaking like a leaf.

Its very windy here this morning, despite the blue skies. Pappa Giorgos was 15 minutes late with the church bells. Seems the strange weather is affecting us all ...

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

Rain coming ...

Well it is a green island ...

Strange as it may seem, but it is June - However the weather forecasts say rain and thunderstorms for the next few days.

The view from my sick bed is of blue sky, however Poseidon say we will be wet later this afternoon. Windfinder who have revised down their predictions, but say the Thursday will be a day for a bar of chocolate, and a glass of red ...

What is certain is we are in for a wet and windy few days, as are the rest of Greece ...

Umbrellas, and pacamacs to the ready - well, I did warn you the rainmaker is here ...

Tourist boom ...

... What tourist boom ?

Saturday evening at 8pm ...
A people free zone ...
Nobody at all ...
Rather worrying, and its just so quiet, rather like May ...

Elsewhere its been quiet of an evening for a week. 11 aircraft landed here on Friday from the UK, around eight on Saturday from Scandanavia. Wherever the people are, they are not in town. Sunday evening a few more people around but for long periods, the paralia was empty except for locals, enjoying a volta.

Friends who have businesses in PapaD are saying they have never known anything like it. No-one is buying anything. Others down the island are saying its quiet there too. Seems the supermarkets and quality time on the balcony rule at the moment this year.
