Easter Sunday ...

Don't forget the clocks went forward - That means lunch is one hour nearer. Off to the kitchen ...

Apologies to Greek friends who may be fasting - Skiathos Lamb for our Easter Sunday lunch ...

Meanwhile as church service has just finished the fish man, has been besieged. By the time I had returned with the camera, he had sold out of fresh squid, and the prawns had gone too ...

Red Snapper & Skorpidia €14 a kilo
Codfish €12 a kilo
Langouistines €20 a kilo
Its not been the best of day's today ...

19:00hrs - still daylight:

Grey skies with the occasional draught of warm wind. The weather man says that the skies are full of sahara sand particles. Locally its aided by the last day of Bonfire smoke - after a few fires got out of control. Fires are banned wef 1st April by local order ...

So its been a day of last's ...

I was the last of the adults to leave the childrens play area, this lunchtime. The last of the 2006 Rioja, went down very well with the Skiathos lamb in the oven. Cambridge came last in the boat race - Meaning that Oxford won !

Not bad at all then ...

All that leaves is this - Oven baked cheesecake, baked today ...

Only - I have reserved the last slice for you ...

Party ...

So after a lazy lunch in the sun, it was on to a birthday party last night ...

Great fun, bouncy castle, lovely cakes and pastries, lots of fizzy drinks. Plenty of fun and games. A lovely birthday cake from the bakery in Papadamatis street.

We had a great time, I think the children enjoyed it too ...

I do enjoy the childrens parties, the birthday song sung in Greek, then Happy Birthday in English. I was very disappointed when we had to go home - But I guess the kids tire out quicker than me ...

However when I got home I did go to sleep very quickly ...

Gone fishing ...

After a lovely afternoon on the paralia with friends ...

Uncle Michael gets down to the serious business of fishing ...

Now all he needs is some Calamari for bait ...

Kalee mera apo Skiatho ...

Good Morning from Skiathos, on the last day of winter ...

Summertime starts tonight at 3am. We all need that hour we loose in bed tomorrow, So up early and up to the roof of the island ...

At daybreak, Skopelos was almost  invisible, due to a sea mist and low cloud. Back to base with water from the spring, and the clear skies promising a better start to the day ...

Down at Liminaria, the flowers were opening for the day, just as the first bonfire smoke drifted across, from the area by St Yorgos church.

Lefteris fishing boat silhouetted, against the sunrise ...

Meanwhile one of the taxi drivers, had already cast his fishing line. The landing net. a sign of promise for the morning catch to come ...

Palio Limani, quiet, water still, and no fishing boats - Where are they all? Looks like there will be plenty of fish at the stall, in Papadamatis Street over the next few days.

Outside the butchers shop in Tries Hieraches, here is mum, still nursing two of the kittens. The ones from the nativity scene. The lady from the Butchers shop, feeds them each day, they are healthy and well ...

But you can tell from Mum's eyes, she is still not sure about Ioannis, with the camera ...

Here they come ...

The Olympic puddle jumper just flew in, full with Brits heading here for Anglican/Catholic Easter holiday ...

Friends on board looking for some rest and recuperation, here on the island, and an escape from the freezing spring weather. Its grey and cool here at the moment, but no doubt the home fires will soon be burning ...

I have been back to the Medical centre today - Three times. They are great and do an excellent job. Its one that is hampered by the fact that Greece seems very short of prescription medicines.

I have been waiting eight days for some. The doctor seemed not to believe me, So he called around the pharmacies, and was very surprised to learn, the medication is out of stock, and on order but not arriving here on the island.

He said that the same medicine, he had prescribed to at least ten patients in the last week. I was the first to return and say its not available. Presumably the others are not well enough to climb the hill ...

Off out for a walk, as I am nearly out of antibiotics, then aerobic exercise is the next best thing ...

Knock Knock ...

Who is there ?

Dimitrios ...

What do you want ?

I have some Olive oil for you ...

Kalee Spera filemous :)

Dimitri 'borrowed' some olive oil from me about a year or so ago, Its been coming back in 1.5 litre bottle instalments, ever since ...

Five more weeks ...

Then you may find me here enjoying the evening air ...

Quote by Michaela, she said - A fabulous restaurant on our favourite island - nothing like sitting under the mulberry tree on a warm Greek summer's evening listening to the bouzouki!

I went to Troulos last night ...

Great day yesterday bumping into island friends ...

Outside the school, there was Captain Michael. I have not seen him for around a year of so. I try not to disturb him when he is reading the paper outside his taverna, in Koukounaries. Yet we always pick up a conversation where we left off last time.

'I was talking about you the other day' he would say - then try to pour a litre of wine down my neck. In fact the times at his taverna, have often ended with me as a gabbling wreck on the bus home ...

Latest news is the tomatoes, egg plants, cucumbers, and herbs are all planted behind the taverna - ready for the summer guests. Usually he visits town twice a year - so to bump into an old friend, made my day.

Ioannis at the school suggested the childrens party crew meet for coffee on Friday. What a great idea, why not indeed ...

On the harbour, I saw something strange - Tourists. Yes a family here enjoying the spring sunshine, T shirts and shorts, the uniform of summer on the rock. Bravo to them exploring the harbour, having come here the hard way.

Later I went to Troulos. Naturally venturing this far down the island, I took my passport.

Bonfires everywhere as the land is cleared, olive groves strimmed as the grass, and weeds soon grow high here at this time of the year. Yesterday was a day of birthday parties, and this one was a friends special day.

A tour of a lovely house, and apartments. Fun and laughter stories shared, lovely food, and the dawning realisation. I was in the company of One Lord and two Duchesses - An island first - even for me ...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thoughts are with the family of the 22 month baby airlifted to Larissa, and then Athens yesterday by military helicopter from the island ...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Express Pegasus ...

Now this is a strange manoeuvre - even for the Express Pegasus ...

Normally the ferries enter the harbour and reverse into position. However on Wednesday it was a new attempt at a docking procedure, that came close to sinking a fishing boat, and left other boats straining on their mooring lines ...

So notice anything different about today?

Pointing the wrong way ...

Yes we have been for a tour of the harbour ...
Where am I going ?

OK lets use the thrusters to perform a handbrake turn - Just for fun ...

Round we go ...

Lets make a whirlpool ...

Here we go ...

The water is boiling, boats are striking the quay, as the huge propellers churn the harbour ...

Nearly there ...

We have nearly made it ...

Lets keep the props turning to create more fun ...

What is missing is the screaming and shouting, from the harbourside from the locals. Certainly giving the crew a piece of their mind, and a few gestures too.

More fun and games later no doubt ...

25η ΜΑΡΤΙΟΥ - Independence Day Parade ...

Greek Independence day - Ελευθερία ή θάνατος - Freedom or Death ...

Its been a few years since that phrase was last mentioned. Here in Skiathos Greek Independence day, like everywhere else in Greece was celebrated with a parade.

The cafes and tavernas were full early as the townsfolk lined the parade route. Traditional music played over the loudspeakers, to put everyone in the right mood for the parade. Flags to the ready, and off we go ...

Here the ladies in traditional Skiathiti dress, pass by the Mayor, Pappa Giorgos and assembled dignitaries on the paralia.

Then its the turn of the Children, whom the parade is really about. The flag bearer and the 1st Boy and Girl being the best in their year ...

Then the scouts take their turn, to receive the applause of the islanders ...

Then after that parade, greetings from friends, invitations for coffee, tsipourakia, and passing the time of day.

Tonight there will be a candlelit procession through town to Tries Hieraches church ...

For me, this is what living in Skiathos is all about. The traditions and the time spent, enjoying the way of life on the island. Something that is missing in summer ...

Sunny Sunday ...

Turned out nice again ...

So a trip out to the deserted Megali Amos beach, on what can best be described as a lovely Sunday afternoon.

I checked the calendar -  Its March 24th, I have had sand between the toes and have been in the sea for the first time this year ...

The Judas tress are starting to Blossom. its that time of year ...

The Irises are lovely, and another sunny view, across the bay to the islands ...

There is a man who swims from Plakes to Vasilias beach every day. Whilst we were on the beach we saw him swim across the bay. A great swimmer, and clearly a very fit man ...

Back home and a fish stew made with salted cod, potatoes tomatoes and garlic - Not bad at all ...

Skiathos - Earth Hour 2013 ...

Earth Hour 2013 ...
Saturday 23rd March - 20:30hrs - 21:30hrs

The lights were dimmed along the paralia, we could see the stars clearly over the harbour.

With Orion overhead looking down on those below, the children celebrated Earth hour, with candles music and song ...

Good morning from Skiathos ...

12 Noon: Official Frappe warning:

Just one of these makes your nose turn red in the sun ...

Snow joke ...

Apparently there is snow in the UK ...

Its a bit nippy here in the wind too,

Sunny but a chill breeze, after last nights thunderstorm. Its cleared the air and the skies too. The new harbour is best described as rather fresh this morning. The trawlers have stayed at home ...

Lovely flowers bursting out in the spring sunshine - everywhere ...

The bourtzi us quite colourful at this time of year, both in the sun ...

Or in the shade amongst the irises, which stood up well to the thunderstorm last night ...

Some views though are just as good whatever the weather ...

However its the Independence day weekend, and Monday is a Public Holiday in Greece, Here preparations are starting for the parade  ...

Meanwhile down on Cyprus they have a lot on their mind this holiday weekend. Good luck to them, they certainly are going to need it ...

Late news: 19:00hrs ...

This afternoon we learned that the Express Pegasus had not sailed, from Volos for the islands, due to the high winds. In the 'gentle' breeze on Palio Limani, the port police arrived and instead of issuing parking tickets raised a nice new flag, for the holiday weekend ...

Hope you like the colours in this photo, amazing light once again here on Skiathos.

Walking along the paralia, you may be tempted by an outside table at Kabourelias. You can tell its a warm day, there are locals, not ex-pats sitting outside enjoying the sunshine.

Still not tempted ?

This photo there is an expanse of sky - Why ?
Well that blemish dead centre, above the flagpole is the moon, not a dirty lens ...

Last picture is Theo, on his way to set the nets. Once again he has promised me a bucket load of fish in the morning, and to take me out on the boat, and to retell me his life story ...

But most of all he is looking forward to summer - Look out ladies ...
