Skiathos in ...

 the year 1935  ...

I love the old photos - how it has changed ...

  1. Quite a change from modern day Skiathos but I guess a tremendous amount has happened in and to the island over the last nearly seventy years including a world war and the arrival of an airport and all that it brought!
Interesting to see on the photo the windmill in the background complete with sails where now is a very pleasant taverna. Nice to just sit there with a salad and beer nowadays and watch the to-ings and fro-ings of both marine and aviation traffic with the blue sky above and the sun over the harbour.
Ian; any idea what the function of the windmill was in the days before it retired?
Do any of the locals know when it ceased to work?

  2. I have many photos of old Skiathos stored on the Laptop, so watch this space. They windmills were primarily used to mill wheat from the island small holdings. They were an important source of income for the owner and probably went into decline, after the war. The Olive press at Tsougria was in use until the 60's.
