Thursday night in Volos ...

Is another football night ...

What was fun was that Germany (Most popular nation in Greece) was getting thrashed by Italy (Now probably the most popular nation in Greece)

The waiter (My new best friend in Volos) told me Merkel (German chancellor - Likes a beer down the back of her neck) is going to get a slap, from Italy on behalf of Greece.

I knew something was going on, when four plates of meze were delivered to my table (Upgraded from three) either he was my best friend, or did not want to be disturbed in the first half.

Well he was right, the German team crumbled as the Italians let them have it big style.

The resounding cheers as the goals went in, from the boys in blue (Did the locals think they were Greece) The German goalie seemed to have an afliction - he could not move his arms when the ball approached - yet could cover the entire pitch in the last five minutes.

Laughter echoed along the harbour as the screens displayed sad German supporters faces in the stands ...

So Germany does not rule this part of Europe called Euro2012 however the final will be between the bad debtor nations - Italy and Spain. Wonder if there will be a German referee ...

PS - What else happens on a Thursday night in Volos ?

It was 23;10pm and thousands of cyclists were stopping the city. Huge convoy stops the traffic as they pass ringing bells and whistles. I have seen this twice on Thursday evenings - No idea what it is all about at all but a very impressive late evening bike ride ...

Tropical Rain ...

This morning the weather broke with torential rains and flash floods. I was soon soaked to the skin and may have contracted trench foot from my early visit to the harbour.

Later aboard a packed and rain lashed Flying Cat 6 I was speeding across a dark grey sea towards the mainland.

There were Grey faces on some of the italian travellers too ~ I feared we would soon be renamed Vomit Comet 6. However the weather calmed as did the anguished looks as we neared the mainland and terra firma

Volos was dry, cloudy and humid - However there was much interest in the passengers disembarking with soaked clothes onto the quay from the islands.

This evening a waiter welcomed me as if i was an old friend - Clearly a sign of visiting the establishment too many times, and attempted to finish me off by meze plate after plate. I even took a passing interest in the football - Spain more favoured than Portugal by the locals - wonder why ?

Total cost for my night out €14 ...

Over 12 hours after arrival and the Timberlands are letting out an odour that would keep vampires at bay. They have been safely despatched to the balcony - Who needs deet laced mossie repellent ?

Do you have fresh fish ?

That was a question, I asked in a Volos taverna recently ...
So i asked if i could take a look - Why ? came the reply and a puzzled look from the waitress.
'Well so i can choose which one i want' I said.
No she said, 'Its in the freezer' ...
Fresh = Frozen in one of the best fish harbours in the aegean ...

Thankfully that is not the situation at Taverna Alexandros, where tonight fresh fish was very clearly on the menu ...

A Tsipouro virgin ...

No not me ...

Its Paul, my latest friend here on the mainland who has for the first time - been led astray on holiday. I discovered he had always wanted to try a meze. Sadly his wife was recovering from a fall, so we popped out for a beer on the way home ...

Beer was soon transformed to Tsipouro to Tsipourakia ...

I think we can safely say - Paul is a convert to the cause ...

Sometimes only a takeaway from Taverna Alexandros will do ...

So a Beef Stifado and Oven chicken to go, and was told off later, for washing the plates :)

Ekologes - Results ...

Distribution of seats (final): ND 129, Syriza 71, Pasok 33, Ind. Greeks 20, Golden Dawn 18, Dem. Left 17, KKE 12

Election results (final): ND 29.66%, Syriza 26.89%, Pasok 12.28%, Ind. Greeks 7.51%, Golden Dawn 6.92%, Dem. Left 6.25%, KKE 4.5%

So we stay in the €uro it seems, and the voters moved to the right after the protest vote last time.

I wonder what the result would have been if the other 40% had turned up to vote ? You have to return to your home town to do so, many work in tourism on the islands, others have had their salaries cut. Many people now just cannot afford to travel home.

Is this the real election vote from the people ...

Patriotism ...

When they scored the paralia went crazy ...

They only won a game not the championship - still somehow the tsipouro stayed in the glass. However my friend Sue emptied a nice tall glass of freezing water into my lap.

At full time flares were lit, and there was some fun and games on the paralia as someone ran around and did artistic designs with the red roman candle, We disappeared in a cloud of blue smoke, numbed by the tsipouro itself,

Today there will be a different kind of Patriotism on display as Greece goes to the election ballot box. Not much evidence of it here though. Greece’s second election in six weeks could bring to power Alexis Tsipras, the radical 38-year-old leftist who has promised to bring the Berlin-backed austerity measures to an end.

This would almost certainly result in the eurozone and the IMF cancelling billions of euros in loans that are keeping the country afloat.

Patriotism or another step on the road to anarchy ?

Euro 2012 ...

Well it is going on and affecting business, here on the island ...

However as logo's go, I think its quite a good one.

Town is empty each evening as the football supporters huddle round TV sets, drinking something called Mythos which really is Carlsberg. You would not go into an Indian restaurant, and order a Mythos, but you do Carlsberg when you have had a few and the pub is shut.

So here on the rock quaffing lovely Mythos (Authentically established and created in 1997) whilst other true Greek beers remain neglected - The football supporters enjoy the games.

I could tell it would be a bad night, England were playing and so were Sweden afterwards. I was concerned that the Paralia would be mistaken for the runway at the local airport. However the aircraft were absent too.

I had the impression the game with France was not going well, as the bars were rather quiet. At 9pm life appeared, and very drunk as the last lager waltz staggered in almost silence to the bus stop. Usually this spectacle is best observed on a Thursday evening around 10pm - however now this month it is reserved for England football matches too.

As an observation, the Brits are the only ones who do this. The Greeks scream and shout, but have passion and an almighty roar when something happens. The French seem to applaud, politely, The Swedes just seem to smile all the time, even when they have had a beer. I think the Germans are playing tonight - quieter still none of them here in Greece ...

As for Mythos, there is a Greek joke about someone who drinks it - However not repeatable here.

Do remember its sold in 3rd and 1/2 litres not pints (Someone said Pint of Mythos yesterday - That made the waiter wince) So the waiter brought him a pint of Carlsberg sorry 1/2 litre of Mythos and he was happy.

He sat shirt open to the waist, and the exposed protruding belly turned towards the sea. It quickly turned Lobster red in the noon day sun ...

The look for summer 2012 only available tattooed, and in UK sizes ...

Fashionistas - What is it with men wearing black socks and brown sandals - someone explain it to me ...

Otherwise the only thing that happened was that two dogs, were procreating enthusiastically just by the Taxi rank. Soon there will be further additions to the local puppy loving, but dog discarding community. What worries me was the amount of non football supporting tourists, who stopped to watch the event ...

My tip for Euro 2012 - Greece could be the first country out of the Euros - both of them - You heard it here first :)

Pentecost Monday ...

Well this morning the priest at Tries Hieraches, is reminding us all about this importance of Pentecost in the religious calendar.

The summoning to church at 07.15 and 07.45 - has been the most insistent for quite some time ...

Today is a public holiday. Banks and offices will be closed, and there will be additional ferry service, to accommodate the travellers from the mainland, heading home later this afternoon ...

Pentecost Sunday ...

This morning the church was very busy - Its a very religious day here on Skiathos ...

Pentecost in Greece happens fifty days after Greek Easter. While in some Christian denominations, this religious holiday slides by with relatively little fanfare, in Orthodox Greece Pentecost is vigorously celebrated. For the more secularly-minded traveler in Greece, it can even be thought of as a kind of "second Easter" if you've unfortunately missed the first.

It occurs on the seventh Sunday after Easter, or the "Fiftieth Day", and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is also known as Trinity Sunday.

"Pente" in Pentecost is an easy way to help remember the number "five" in Greek if you can associate it with the "50 days". Like other religious holidays in Greece, such as Easter itself and the Feast of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, transit schedules may shift and extra ferries or ferry stops may be added to accommodate Pentecost travelers {http://gogreece.about.com}

The observance is much less than Easter, however there are many visitors here from the mainland enjoying the lovely weather.

Monday will be a public holiday, and the tavernas should be very busy ...
