Short season ...

Can it get any shorter ?

I met three people today who finish work for the season tomorrow, and are leaving for home.

Last night it was quiet, just like back in May - but August is not even at an end yet. Now I learn, that September 4th is the last day that the Express Skiathos does two trips from Volos

Its nearly winter again ...

Today in the Cafe - 8 ...

Our host actually delivered me a cappuccino to the office this morning ...

She must have felt guilty, after earlier telling me off for sitting in her chair.

I have been to the store on the ring road, and sadly, there will be no more directors chairs delivered until next year.

I wanted one with "Do not sit in this chair It is the bosses chair" written on the back

It can wait ...

I have sat in every other chair in the place, sometimes twice in the day. Still thats what happens when a veggie, cooks black pudding ...

August - Its more like May ...

The meltemi winds have cooled things quite a lot.

Day after day of winds from the north that do not abate until after 4pm - There was a distinct nip in the air tonight, it feels like May ! Temperatures are forecast to improve, and much less winds at last over the next few days.

I hope so, i can feel my second swim of the season coming on ...

Today in the Cafe - 7 ...

I was summoned at 8am ...

The new Blackboard was finally in evidence, and after all I had the chalk. After a lengthly debate - Yellow was selected (Rich not Pastel) I was elected to undertake the signwriting role.

Only to be told the letters were too small, not enough emphasis on the 'Black Pudding' and could i fit in Tea cakes and something about the omelettes ...

Somehow I fitted a brief menu, and a detail on the 'Black Pudding' on a piece of painted plywood 30cm x 45cm.

Eyecatching - yes, but only if you look closely enough  ...

Port closed - Meltemi winds ...

This morning the port police closed the port due to strong winds ...

The meltemi blew hard this morning and it was a good force six in the harbour, at 9am. Only the ferries could operate and the flying cats and dolphins were struggling in the breeze.

Later the aircraft were struggling with the conditions as they flew in to land on runway 02. Yet soared into the sky with the headwinds on departure.

Criss Cross - Yum Yum ...

No I am not halucinating about chinese food ...

I have crossed town a couple of tiimes on foot this morning.

The girls went shopping lat night and i have been to get the things they forgot, Nappies tomatoes, cucumbers and some light bulbs.

Actually - I forgot the lightbulbs two weeks ago and have been to the electricians many times since - returning without them. So this morning was a man on a mission.

After a while scanning the shelves, both alone and with the owner  was offered a 100w version - along with a vision of the lights dimming in the street. So he said he would go to his other shop (He only has one) and get them.

Around 20 minutes later along with assorted other bulbs, in a nice new Vodafone bag from the airconditioning mans store he was back. I had been sitting in the sun and was starting to burn, and a stunning €9 lighter in pocket for two (3 for £4.50 on Amazon - and added to my UK shopping list)

A trip across town to Asteras for nappies for junior and some wine (Still only €2.95 a bottle) A quick hello in the coffee shop, and by now was rather hungry as was Junior ...

It took just a waft from a street away ...

We had passed near Grill house Koziakis, probably the best street food in Skiathos.

So now suitably stuffed after a mixed plate (Leftovers in the fridge) and a beer - am off for a sleep just like junior ...

You get asked many things ...

You get asked many things here when you are working here and being English and a former tourist. I try to help as best i can.

Do you speak French/Italian/Serbian/Portugese/Spanish etc

No but I do speak English ...

Where is this ?
How do i get to ?
Is this any good ?
Do you go to ?
OK who does ?

and can you look after ...

Sometimes you are like a traffic policeman on point duty.
In the process you learn a lot about people amd countries - Its great fun

Last night, i was looking after some kids buggies whilst a family went to dinner at a nice restaurant. They returned and the eldest child gave me a carrier bag with a bottle of ice cold Heineken in it.

That has never happened before ...

So whoever the family were - Thank you, it really made my evening.

Today in the Cafe - 7 ...

A consignment of contraband black pudding, should be arriving on the island via our secret courier, this Friday ...

From next Monday it will be included in the Full English breakfast, in the 'Cafe' for those who walk whippets, and like it ...

Do you speak French ? ...

Some French high rollers tried to moor up last night. Politely told to contact the Port for mooring arrangements. Naturally they took no notice but very quickly learned some Greek from the man in charge

So they ignored everyone and berthed in the flying cat position ...

Cue Port officer who eventually persuaded them that the big red boat with a number on it, behind them wanted their spot, and had owners rights and they should leave.

So they berthed where the Dolphin arrives ...

Cue Port officer who was close to jumping up and down at this moment, who eventually persuaded them that the little blue noisy boat behind them wanted their spot back too.

€250k boat, fully equipped with side thrusters, sat nav, GPS and four people who cannot be bothered to use the radio to book a berth.

Great entertainment - Repeated again this morning when the Cat arrived at 7.30am - Do love the French - not so 'Entente cordiale'

Today in the Cafe - 6 ...

Message from one of the Putin hoods, who arrived by speedboat, late last night.

"We are KGB - 1 Dozen teacakes here at 10am"
Replied - "Sorry we are with the Co-op and its our morning off - Could you pop back later"

Chelski fleet ...

Much excitement on the harbour, waiters are increasing the prices on the meal deals ...

There are 4 huge motor cruisers moored to the right of Glossa, rumour has it Mr Putin and his entourage are back, same as last year.

The boats are the Abramovich fleet - Wonder if any of the Chelski boys are around ...

Today in the Cafe - 5 ...

Feeling somewhat Biblical this morning - "No room at the inn" and somewhat hungry too, after the "Teacakes" were withdrawn from popular demand.

Somewhere up in the hills a secret batch is being produced for future consumption to a descerning island clientelle

Mr Papandreou, - No relation to Mr Kipling, enquired at Asselinos taverna only yesterday as he had an urgent order, for some EU mates who had helped him recently ...

Today in the Cafe - 4 ...

Chaos in the cafe ...

'Adnams man' did not report for duty this morning. The cafe was in turmoil on the busiest day of the week, Hungry Brits with planes to catch, descended in search of the "Full English" from the Flying cat and Dolphin. Even a couple of "Oldskinflints" were in the house tucking in.

Not the best of days to try to get a coffee, Two attempts today both times not a seat to be had.

Headed home to find out I had run out of cheese ....

Today in the Cafe - 3 ...

I boycotted the joint this morning, and when i passed later, I was shown a full english - Its the nearest yet that I have been to one yet.

I live in hope ...

Today in the Cafe - 2 ...

I was held hostage for a while this morning, I was only released when i answered the phone on host's behalf.

I had paid my bill - Well at least most of it and had enjoyed a bacon sandwich and a cappuchino in three seperate locations within the cafe this morning.

It seems the butter cubes are stored somewhere beneath the polar ice cap, and even with Global warming, fail to melt on demand ...

PS - Who ate all the excellent teacakes ?

Today in the Cafe - 1 ...

It was one of those days, awake early the sound of distant thunder. I just fancied a breakfast - A full english, first time this year i said - treat myself.

So off to the cafe, and thats what i ordered ...

"You do not want that" said my friendly host.

Thats strange i thought - I just did ...

"You want the special omlettte"

It seemed that i did, because that is what i got ...

However - After the adjoining table had their full english - which looked very good indeed.

What was special about the omlette I said to "Adnams Man"

Host replied - "no mushroioms they went on the last full english" ....
